Loss of altitude/speed

Featured Replies

Has anyone noticed sudden/almost instantaneous loss of altitude and airspeed whilst using wxRE online ? It has happened to me not once or twice but many times and I have only managed to rescue the aircraft twice. It seems to happen when WXre updates, there are violent swings in airspeed then all of a sudden you are on a different heading, dropping like a stone with no air speed. It is not the pitot heat (I thought of that) and the only thing I can tie it down to is wxRE as it never happened before I installed it. Most of these occurances have happened whilst in the cruise at between fl280 and fl350. Any info appreciated. By the way apart from this annoying issue this is one great piece of software. All the best and seasons greetingsLau Hu

Hi, one other person reported this some time ago, but it had to do with PITOT heat not being on. What you are experiencing is strange indeed... let's start with the basics since you did not mention it.. FSUIPC Settings as recommended? Wind Smoothing enabled? V2.94 or later FSUIPC? Latest ADVDISP (if you use it)? Have you tried NOT using wxRE and see if you experience the same thing? I don't see how wxRE can cause this but if you are positive then we can look into it further. Let me know!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Damian Thank you for the very prompt reply. I am using latest FSUIPC with setting as per the instructions with wxRE. I will try both with and without wxRE tomorrow to look for repeatability. Many thanks.Lau Hu

Damian, Lau,This sounds a whole lot like windshear. If wind smoothing is turned off, and you get an updated FD that has winds that switch suddenly from being on your nose to being on your tail, and with a corresponding dramatic increase in wind velocity, this very thing can result. Basically the airplane will stall because of a sudden loss of speed, and pulling the nose up will only slow you further so down you come. Basically, it is a wind-shear at altitude, if you will. It will only happen with a 3rd party wx generator running as FS' weather isn't that "reliable" as to give you those kinds of changes. I've had it many times with FSMeteo, but it isn't the 3rd party wx generator's fault - it's just doing what it's being told to do. As you suggested Damian, make sure the wind smoothing is on and carry lots of airspeed (i.e. if climbing in a jet, try not to climb at less than M0.7 or 300 once above 10,000 feet). If you still get it, despite all the above (and running with pitot heat on, which you should always do anyway), then it's something to look into further.Hope that helps.Glenn

Ok, have removed the check mark in set wind shear sharp and so far it has not happened again. I will post if it re occurs. Thanks for the help.

I suffer from a similar problem. I've isolated it to jumps while I perform 3 actions.1. Look outside via joystick POV selector or via keyboard.2. Open the comm panel.3. Open the GPS display.I've noticed that the comm panel and GPS display primarily stop causing problems if they do not interfere with the ADVDISPLAY screen I use with Radar Contact 3 and fit inside the normal dashboard.I noted this AM that if I went into the FSUIPC settings while flying and closed it (no changes), the problem went away. The problem on my system was a jump of approximately 10% in airspeed...so this jump was a greater problem at cruising airspeed (M.77) than climb out (270kts). It had caused the airframe to overstress on one occasion and often caused massive heading swings as the autopilot recovered from the massive airspeed injection (and resulting pitch change). I had all the FSUIPC settings mirroring the settings suggested in the pdf manual that came in the download package. I'll try the suggestion of turning off the sharp wind sheer and see if that takes care of the problem once and for ever.Cheers, Mike Lyons

I have set (in FSUIPC) wind to change quite slowly, 1kt or 1Deg every 2 secs. This prevents the violent wind changes you describe.

I have also had this problems, both times at FL350. Once was over the pacific from FAJS-YSSY and the other PHNL-YSSY. It is as stated a massive loss of airspeed due to a sudden change in the winds eg. Your cruising at 269kts indicated and the next your below 30kts. As you can imagine in a PSS744 this spells absolute disaster both times un-recoverable. I have the FSUPIC settings as stated in the manual and have just changed my fs2002.config TURBULANCE to 0.2 as stated in the release notes. My wind change setting is set 1 knot / 1 degree of change for absolute crawling changes. But i belive its when new settings update and it kicks them straight in. Thats just my gut feeling. I have had Active Sky wxRE for about a fortnight now. Aside from this issue which can be a great depression since i fly REAL TIME from place to place, no time acceleration. ACTIVE SKY wxRE is an amazing program. ITS AWESOME. Hope that someone takes a good look at it to find out what the problem is. Happy New Year to everyone out there.
