January 24, 200323 yr I was on Final Approach in the Dash 8 and there was a AI Plane on the runway which took off. Man did I get hit with wake turbulance. My question is regarding Wake Turbulance..Can it make the aircraft uncontrollable? I understand getting bumped and rocked a little. But, I had a hard time controlling the aircraft on final, especially using the Ailerons. It seemed like a strong continuous GUST instead of wake turbulence. Also I am flying along about FL 160 and all of sudden I get knocked off course with a cross wind?In real life in a plane that size (Dash-8) I have encountered turbulence but not any type of wind force that severe. Is ActiveSky not correctly managing these forces?Barry
January 24, 200323 yr Hmmnn, well first of all, you shouldn't have hit wake turbulence if you were landing and he was taking off (assuming you were landing on the same runway he was taking off from). His wake wouldn't start until the wheels left the ground, and even then the vortex's will descend to, and then diverge quite quickly after hitting the ground. As for it making the aircraft uncontrollable, you don't mention what type of AI aircraft it was. A 747 can definitely make it more than a little interesting for something the size of a Dash 8. In real life, wake turbulence has been the cause of a fair number of crashes over the years (fewer now that they understand what is happening), and it can bring down some fair-sized airplanes. In a fully loaded 747 just after takeoff when the wing loading is very high, wake turbulence has all the power and characteristics of a full-blown tornado, except that they are horizontal instead of vertical. They can easily overpower a light to medium weight aircraft, and even give some heavies a nasty ride. So, the answer is yes, it could cause loss of control. However, if the AI aircraft was something like a 737 or smaller, it could give a Dash 8 a rather nasty roll to doing nothing at all, respectively.I hope that gives you a clue or two, but fire of another post here with questions if you'd like to know more.Glenn
January 25, 200323 yr Well it probably wan't wake turbulance then according to the defintion. But something was knocking me around...Barry
January 25, 200323 yr Commercial Member Hi Barry,Do you have wind smoothing enabled in FSUIPC? This will help with wind direction changes (as per FD winds, for example). If this isn't the problem, perhaps your turbulence is a little 'much' for your tastes.. some people perfer less turbulence (it is very subjective!) and you can adjust your turbulencescale in your fs2002.cfg - check the readme.rtf file, it explains this process... Let me know if this helps!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
