Suggestion for wxRE 1.5 or Later

Featured Replies

Hi Damian,Glad to see you back up and online again :-).I was just thinking, and I have no idea as to how difficult this might be to accomplish, but (and this is with respect for sure!) I have an idea that you might consider for a future release of wxRE.As it stands now, wxRE launches and spends a few minutes loading in the last METAR's, etc. it had to work with from the previous session. Then I immediately (after it's finished loading) go off and download the wx for the next session I'm about to start. This is true whether or not I'm using the program in on or offline mode. Thus, it spends time each time it comes up, loading in METAR's twice (one set from the previous session, and the next from the download I choose for the current session). This is fairly time consuming. Now, what I'm wondering is, is it possible to have wxRE not load any METAR's or data until you ask it to in the beginning? I'm thinking this might save some time as it comes up. In other words, have wxRE launch with no data, THEN you select the weather you want for the next session (that can be old, saved wx, or a new download you've just requested), rather than waiting for it to load one set of wx data, only to have me go and change it right away anyway. Please don't construe any of this as a complaint in any way of wxRE. This is the greatest thing since "they" "invented" weather back when I was just a kid (oops, giving away my real age now!! :-lol). Also, this might create some serious headaches for you to try and implement, and if that's the case, then don't give it a second thought. Thanks Damian! Have a great day!!Glenn

Hi Glenn,>Now, what I'm wondering is, is it possible >to have wxRE not load any METAR's or data until you ask it >to in the beginning? I'm thinking this might save some time >as it comes up. I read a similar request here in the forum, having a "Start" button in AS which would start the weather downloading/processing.I also think that would be a great feature, and I am sure Damian will consider it ... :)Dirk

Yeah! That would do it nicely. We'll see, but as I say, if it means a tonne of new coding, I'm not sure it would be worth that much effort. Not being a programmer, I really don't know what it might take (I've been known to ask for the moon before, while thinking I was simply asking for a cloud :-lol).Glenn

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion folks..The only downside to this is that it now brings an extra step to enable weather processing. Currently you just install, run, and you have weather. You can still change your options and save them so that the next startup will be as you require. The initial process must occur at some point. Perhaps the best option is to create paused and unpaused processing modes, with an option to always start ASwxRE paused. I will think about this more and come up with a solution!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Thanks Damian,Yeah, as I say, this one isn't worth a tonne of resources on your part. It's a "nicety" but certainly not a necessity, especially with the option you mention above. If you have time to check it out, great, but don't lose sleep over this one :-).Glenn

Hi Damian,>The only downside to this is that it now brings an extra >step to enable weather processing. Currently you just >install, run, and you have weather. Well, the install step is one-time only, so it boils down to run, and have weather against run, start, and have weather - not such a big downside I would say ...I used FSMeteo before, but ActiveSky's great features and results made me switch without any hesitation, and I never started FSMeteo again since then ... :) The only thing that I really miss is the ability to start and stop the weather processing - FSMeteo had these 'Start' and 'Stop' buttons ...>You can still change >your options and save them so that the next startup will be >as you require. True, but this is not always appropriate. Let me give an example: for VATSIM online flights, I change the option to use VATSIM METARs, for offline flights I choose the other. But I dont know in advance if I want to use VATSIM or other METARs on my next flight. Same for the FSFlightMax export: sometimes I fly with FSFM on, sometimes I dont. In the latter case I dont want the overhead of downloading the additional cycles, so I change the option before the flight ...>The initial process must occur at some >point. Perhaps the best option is to create paused and >unpaused processing modes, with an option to always start >ASwxRE paused. That would be great :), or maybe the other way around : having a 'Start' button, and in addition an option to "Autostart' that the user can set ... Either way, the result is the same, and would make everyone happy - the ability to start ActiveSky 'idle', as well as having it behave like it does now - without requiring the additional 'Press Start button Step'. Ok, you are the programmer, and I'm sure you'll come up with the best solution :)Thanks for all your great work,Dirk
