Is a gauge possible for Active Sky for weather info, li

Featured Replies

Just curious, I LOVE Active Sky very much, and is so much better than FS_METEO but the one thing that I did like about FS_METEO was the weather gauge, that translated the Metar's into plain english, so that you could figure out what the weather is where your at, and where you are going, including the temperature, in F or C. Reading metars if fine, but the key feature I really miss from the gauge, and am the most interested in is the temperature. As I am sure we all know, the temp gauges on panels, are not all that accurate, and shift + Z will give you wind direction and speed, and all kinds of info, EXCEPT the temperature. :-) So what I would like to see, IF possible is some kind of gauge that can provide the temp, at current plane position and or altitude, or any other way of getting that info. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks, Gary Hall

Gary,Not sure you know this, but a METAR only reports surface temperatures. The FS guages do a good job reporting this value. In the air I'm really not sure how FS determines temps. Maybe someone else has further information.Hope this helps,Jim

Hi Gary,As you enter new wind layers, wxRE will display a message (if messages enabled) with the new winds and temperature. Your are correct FS2002 temp gauges have a problem. They will display the current temp modified against airspeed - the faster you go, the warmer the reading (which is correct but highly overdone). The best method of getting the temperature is by looking at the FD winds forecast and METAR.. learn to decode these.. in the METAR it is always two numbers separated with a slash i.e. "10/9" the first number being the temp (celcius) and the second being the dewpoint. In the FD it is the last pair of digits for the depicted wind level. Refer to the documentation for more details. Hope that helps! BTW a gauge is being worked on...-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

I presume that FS computes air temperature according to standard ISA formulas and adjust it according to the temperature you (or wxRE) set at different altitudes. If you use standard MET setting in FS2002 (eg not using wxRE or disabling winds and temperatures aloft simulation), you'll see outside air temps varying at altitudes according to your preset ground temp (eg -10 on the ground will be about -81 C at 35000 feet),that is, if you don't input a temp inversion (just as the one the often causes thick fog on the ground but clear skies and higher temp just above the inversion layer), your OAT will decrease while climbing and increase while descending. Some panels display accurate and realistic readings (PSS Airbus is one, you get SAT and TAT).Enrico.

Thanks to all who have replied, i do appreciate it very much. I am glad a gauge is being worked on. Hopefully it will have temp info and a selectable conversion like C or F i live in USA and know F but most of the temp info when available is in C and have to constantly convert, would be nice if could see already converted :-) along with the current METAR and destination METARS already decoded. Makes things much easier, thanks again all, and have a great day. GARY

Damian:I printed the Decoder ps. 51-52 to have handy, and I use those docs as an interpreter. As you know, there are interpretations for both TAF and Metar. I have TAF selected for my WX Internet d/l. Is it easier to decode Metar alone? Although I used to be able to read WX reports when I was flying the real thing, I have heck of a time reading some of the particulars in these. *:-*Ron McLeod CYEG

Hi Ron,The TAF data is extremely similar to METAR format. It's like this:(Time, Valid Time, Latest Observation in METAR-like code)Then the elements:(Becoming, From, Temporary, etc.)(Valid time or period)(METAR-type code to specify the significant conditions expected for the forecast time)The decoder can be used for both TAF and METAR reports. The important information is the actual forecast/report data, regardless of which kind of report it is. Hope that helps!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table
