March 6, 200323 yr Just curious,Does ActiveSky model thermals & other temperature currents as well as up-drafts from slopes / mountains?.Just curious as I am an old FUIII flyer & I used to enjoy the Stemme motor glider. A Stemme has recently been released for FS2002, so I'm wondering weather (pardon the deliberate misspell :-)) I will have the ability to experience these things in FS2002?RegardsAl
March 6, 200323 yr Al,No sorry it doesn't as far as I know. NOAA and VATSIM weather do not record these events, to my knowledge. Hope this helps,Jim
March 6, 200323 yr Hmmmmmm...Can ActiveSky 'simulate' these things then, or are they beyond the weather modelling of FS2002?Curious though as FS2002 does include a default glider & talks about 'thermals'???Look forwad to more responces... Any Comments Damian? ... Superb product by the way!!! :-))Al
March 9, 200323 yr Commercial Member Hi, the turbulence of such is modeled somewhat, but updrafts themselves are not simulated. The current FS implementation of this requires scenery (i.e. the thermals are where you program them in the .bgl files, and are not dynamic).I am looking into this for ASwxRE v2.0 and FS9.-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
March 12, 200323 yr Of course you can always 'program' those 'thermals' on certain places (like ridges) with help of a program 'Thermiek' by Max RoodveldtRead more about it here: http://www.virtualsoaring.org/library/Revi...miek_review.htm or download the program here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~roodvmax/downloads/u...es/thermiek.zipTake a look at Max Roodveld's page. It's nice: http://www.fszwever.com/ And when you see him ask him to finish his great tutorial on Soaring Opps he's working on ;) Rob "Holland&Holland" de Vries http://www.emotipad.com/emoticons/Flying.gif
March 12, 200323 yr Rob,Thankyou so much for the links & ideas... I was ignorantly unaware that such fine programs existed...A question though..... If running a program like thermiek, should i refrain from running programs like ActiveSky...I.E. will they clash horribly whilst trying to control the weather... or will they compliment each other??Damian... do you know if your prog will work along-side a thermal / ridge-lift prog like thermiek?look forward to your respnces..Al
March 12, 200323 yr Commercial Member Hi Al,I think it would work quite well with this add-on. It would simply provide a thermal updraft effect in the areas you assign. The weather is independant of this... you'll still get your wxRE wx and effects! I would try experimenting and see how it works out for you - it may be just what you're looking for. Let us know how it turns out!!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
March 13, 200323 yr Hi All,Damian is right, they should compliment each other. Of course there are always situations thinkable which contradict eachother e.g. low pressure and updrafts (often downdrafts with before a rainfront) but I experimented with placing thermals around mountains and canyons just for the updraft effects while flying in mountains and it worked out fine.I'm now working on a little scenery experiment of a forest fire also using Thermals (Thermiek) to simulate updrafts from heated air. It make fun rides with the firebomber :)So invest in activesky, it's absolutely worth the money because I saw a 100% boost in reality of weather. And now that the little issues are resolved with a new version.....go go goRob "Holland&Holland" de Vries http://www.emotipad.com/emoticons/Flying.gif
March 13, 200323 yr :-)Rob "H&H"I have to say i am already an extremely satisfied customer of Activesky!!!Damian - Just to let you know, I downloaded the alterernate 1.6 patch upgrade.. & It installed a DREAM!!! all settings from 1.15 remembered. It just carried on as though there hadn't been an upgrade :-) ... Of course the version said 1.6One thing to maybe think about..... the automated weather voice is a superb concept, but on my system at least, there are un-naturally long gaps between each word being said.... is this deliberate or my system. Or something you intend to potentially address?Kindest Al
March 13, 200323 yr :)Could this be something like the voices in RC3 which was solved by giving the program an "above priority" setting....(XP) to call the Windows Task Manager--> Processes Tab -->Find proces activesky --> click right mouse button -->select Set Priority --> set above normalHaven't test it, maybe i'm saying something stupid here, but you never know.. :)Rob "Holland&Holland" de Vries http://www.emotipad.com/emoticons/Flying.gif
March 13, 200323 yr Rob,Your right, this fixed the problem(for me at least).Do you know of a more perminant way to raise the priority of AS so I dont have to use task manager everytime I use ASRegards...Bart458
March 13, 200323 yr Chaps,Interesting idea as a workaround...However what about all those impovorished 98 & Me users that lack full Task Manager capabilities?????Any thoughts.....? I'm sure Damian will have an answer or two :-)AlP.S. Rob, I'm gonna give that thermal prog a try with Activesky running tonight..... see how it performs with the Stemme...
March 13, 200323 yr Great Al, let us know please about the results....About priority: like a said in the post above the same problem arose with Radar Contact 3. The folks at RC3 made a more or less structural solution by providing some sort of batchprogram. But with version V3.01 there is no need anymore for batching I belief. So they programmed it into it (don't shoot me if I say something wrong here)Perhaps Damian should contact John Dekker or Doug to learn about their solutions. It couldn't harm however to roam the RC3 forum :)Rob "Holland&Holland" de Vries http://www.emotipad.com/emoticons/Flying.gif
