Very High altitude wind simulation - 60k - 100k feet

I tend not to see much when i'm screaming along in my Trans-Hypersonic experimental craft that i am working on.... Acheived Mach 5.03 today... totally stable & steerable, @ 80,000ftLondon - New Zealand in 4hrs 45mins!!! nose tip temp ... 1008 deg C .. MAD!!! *grin*Seriously though... does ActiveSky, simulate & model VERY High altitude atmospherics???? If yes, what exactly goes on up there? & if no, can it?????RegardsAl

My understanding is ActiveSky highest weather simulation is maxed out at 39K from their it extends everything upward indefinately. To answer your question about what goes on up their, I heard once that we know little about the stratosphere, thermosphere, and ionsphere espically. I'm talking about upwards of 100,000 feet now. I heard once that violent thunderstorms occur with the absence of clouds they call them just sprites. I believe above the jetstream the winds calm down a good bit, after all at this point theres little air to blow around. One theory to the Space Shuttle crash was being hit by a sprite.

Hi, yes, in v1.15 it is simulated up to 39K then upwards undefinately. In reality, after the tropopause (approx 37K ft) the temperature above will no longer decrease with altitude, and will generally be consistent. The winds below and above the tropopause usually vary significantly. Thus the creation of jetstreams and clear air turbulence (creates a spinning vortex of colliding air types). In v1.6, any reported altitude is supported. I have seen this upwards of FL600 (it depends on the winds report/station). So temps and winds will be realistic when in online mode and will effectively simulate this effect. When offline, its simulated, and doesn't change conditions above ~45Kft. Past this winds will stay consistent but temps will continue to decrease.Hope that helps!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Excellent guys!Thankyou for the responces :-)I look forward to v1.6.kind regardsAl

Yes Damien, please make sure the new version does go up to FL 850 or so, being avid Concord flyer at FL 590 and SR-71 flyer FL 800-830 that is important to some of us :-) Thanks, GARY
