March 14, 200323 yr Obviously the winds aloft in the new version 1.6 are displayed in a different format than before. Previous to this version I understood how to read them. Now, I no longer understand them.I have searched the User Guide and can see nothing about this new format. And I have searched the FAQs. Nothing!Would someone please enlighten me? Please give an example and explain.Appreciate any responses.Bob
March 14, 200323 yr Commercial Member Hi Bob.. the format you see in the status aloft window is:ID, Dist, Aloft EntriesThe Entries consist of: Height MSL Feet (Meters): Wind Dir True / Wind Speed / Temp ©. Some entries will be null (0) and indicate that there was no reading for that particular height. The format is essentially the same as seen during the text status messages from winds aloft. The best way to plan for winds is to use your country's air/weather service's website. Here in the US it is www.aviationweather.gov for NOAA. There should be charts available for upper winds throughout your route of flight. The format of the charts will vary country to country, but there should be helpful decoding information on the website that provides the charts. If you need help locating a website for planning information, just ask here I am sure someone will be able to help.-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
March 14, 200323 yr Damian,Still don't understand it thoroughly.I am sitting at KCLE (Cleveland, Ohio) in my FS2002.----------------------------------------------------------------------ActiveSky wxRE V1.6 shows the below data in the Winds Aloft. Seems way too complicated! My eyes sort of go bonkers with this! The dashes sort of blend in with the minuses. Perhaps, if you used something else like brackets around the entries, it would clear up the confusion.WMO ID: 72520 DIST: 92 - 627(164):0/0/0 - 3018(789):350/19/-4 - 5581(1459):350/22/-2 - 11452(2994):315/25/-7 - 21382(5590):315/49/-17 - 27655(7230):330/49/-31 - 35152(9190):345/67/-49 - 39665(10370):325/46/-57 - 44982(11760):295/48/-63 - 51829(13550):300/57/-57 - 61621(16110):290/38/-60 - 70189(18350):315/20/-60 - 78260(20460):320/19/-59 - 90576(23680):30/9/-57 - 100445(26260):20/11/-58I guess this means:WMO ID: 72520 <-------------Reporting Station IdentifierDIST: 92 <------------------Distance is 92 nm (Don't know what this means-I am 92 from wx station?) 627(164):0/0/0 <-------------First Entry 627 ft (164 meters): 0/0/0 Ground Reading3018(789):350/19/-4 <---------Second Entry 3018 ft (789 meters): 350 True/19 kts/-4 Celsius5581(1459):350/22/-2 <--------Third Entry 5581 ft(1459 meters): 350 True/22 kts/-2 Celsiusetc.----------------------------------------------------------------------Below is what used to show in the previous version of ActiveSky wxRE and what is reported when I go to the link you just gave me. This was easy for me and your user guide explained it well.CLE 0414 3525-01 3428-03 3331-05 3255-15 3261-28 326046 336156 336965----------------------------------------------------------------------I think what you have told me is not to use this new wind aloft data for planning my flight. But, I have been using it up till now to give me an idea of winds aloft that are near me while flying; Especially, low level VFR flights of short distances in small planes.Anyhow, I do appreciate your program. It has made my flight simulation experience much more real!Thank you,Bob
March 14, 200323 yr Commercial Member Bob,You've got it perfectly..For US you can use the FD reports just fine - just like you are doing now... in other countries this will be different. Remember that the winds STATIONS will be different and in different areas (WMO versus FD) but they should still be consistent together and accurate for planning.-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
