A question before buying ActiveSky WxRE

Featured Replies

Hello Damian, Jim and everybody in this forum.I just would like to know a couple of things before buying ActiveSky WxRE. In this moment, I'm a user of ActiveSky 1.5 and I have to say that for a freeware product it's very good. I'm convinced that ActiveSky WxRE is much better.I'm aware that the features on the freeware version are not even close to the pay version, and that WxRE has less impact in the sim/computer performance. But, I would like to know if after getting WxRE I will still experiencing stutters like I'm having right now with the freeware, I only get this stutters each time ActiveSky updates the weather and sometimes (specially in approaches) can be very annoying.Second and last, I would like to know what do you expect that are going to be the features on ActiveSky WxRE 2.0 in FS-COF, I'm asking this because as I know, FS-COF will have what it seems to be a weather feature that will work pretty similar to ActiveSky.Thanks all for your time.Best regards,Carlos.PD: This are my specs in case you need themPentium 4 (Celeron) 1.7 GHZMotherboard: Intel D845EBG2On board sound256 RAM (DDR)40 GB Hard Drive (75% free space)GeForce 2 MX400 64 Mb (driver 41.09)DirectX 8.1Windows XP Home (SP1)FS2002 Pro

Hi Carlos,Thanks for the questions. First, my idea on question #2 is I'm not really sure. Software such as AS is an ongoing project, growing and becomming better as we go along. Damian will have a better view on this.As far as #1 goes, I look over your system specs and these things jump out at me. You are running XP with only 256 RAM, MS suggests 512. Other users have noticed a general difference when going up to 512 RAM. Your video card is also a slow point. It can't keep up with the number of textures, especially on landings. Do you experience stuttering on landings without AS running? In the new version we have options to disable both winds and weather updates on landings, so that feature might help you and your system. Let us know if you have other questions.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

Hi Carlos,Concerning stuttering.. freeware ActiveSky 2002 had many reports - I think most users suffered stuttering on occasion especially during download. The internet routines were completely different and less advanced. In wxRE this has all be rewritten for more performance, and v1.0 wxRE was probably 4-5 times faster than 2002. Each update has also increase performance and in the latest 1.6 approx 90% of all stuttering reports from earlier versions were confirmed as "resolved". In general, you may get suttering, but it is very rare and probably not related to wxRE. During extreme-demand processing such as fsflightmax export, the new "disable all updates during force" option will keep things running smooth during the approach phase.Concerning 2.0, I can't release many details yet but to say that it will compliment and add to the functionality announced in FS9 and its new weather features including distant weather objects and new cloud graphic format. Together with FSW we will be putting together something very cool! This will include intelligent cloud graphic selection for more variety and realism in your cloudscapes. In addition many suggestions from wxRE users will be implemented. I will announce more on this later as design work progresses...Hope that helps!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Thank you very much to both Damian and Jim, that's all I needed to know. Now I'm ready to buy your product and as Jim recommended, I will upgrade my RAM to 512 MB, I know this will make my system run smother. After the release of FS-COF I will upgrade the processor and the video card, I just want to wait a while and see if the prices go down a litle. Thanks again for your fast answers; you've gained a new client.Best regards, Carlos. :-yellow1
