March 26, 200323 yr I am having a problem with winds aloft since I have upgraded to 1.6. But my problem seems to be different than those already discussd in this forum.METARs for my present location load fine, but Winds Aloft do not correspond. Specifically, when parked at KHOU (Houston's Hobby Airport), I receive the METAR from the "Active Wx Station KHOU / 1 nm", but Winds Aloft show a "WMO ID" despite HOU being a winds aloft station (known from previous version). Winds Aloft window reads like this:WMO ID: 72240 DIST: 110 - 459(120):335/15/16 - 2995(783):295/9/14 - 5718(1495):225/5/10 - 11789(3082):205/18/0 - 21803(5700):245/28/-16 - 28114(7350):235/32/-28 - 35726(9340):240/28/-45 - 40277(10530):270/35/-55 - 45709(11950):265/67/-55 - 52823(13810):280/65/-54When using the previous version of ActiveSky wxRE, it would load HOU winds aloft just fine.Any suggestions on possible settings I may need to change?Thank you,Troy S. March 26, 200323 yr Troy,First off your settings are fine. The code you are getting is the code for Lake Charles, LA. It looks to be the closest winds station that is in the WMO.txt file. We know that not every station made it into this release. Stations can be added though. I tried to quickly find the ID# for HOU but couldn't find it. I found the lat. and long. which is also needed. If I do find it I'll get back to you.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support
March 27, 200323 yr Thanks Jim:I appreciate the fast tech support.I have no problem if those winds are from Lake Charles. That is close enough. I guess I was thrown off by the "WMO" abbreviation. In the past version, it would say "HOU". So I guess my next question is I am confused about the format of how the wind speed, direction and altitudes are listed here:WMO ID: 72240 DIST: 110 - 459(120):335/15/16 - 2995(783):295/9/14 - 5718(1495):225/5/10 - 11789(3082):205/18/0 - 21803(5700):245/28/-16 - 28114(7350):235/32/-28 - 35726(9340):240/28/-45 - 40277(10530):270/35/-55 - 45709(11950):265/67/-55 - 52823(13810):280/65/-54What does WMO stand for?Is ID: 72240 the code for Lake Charles? If so, how do I determine what station each ID stands for?I'm assuming DIST: 110 means that my aircraft is currently 110 nm from Lake Charles? How does the first entry (and subsequent entries) read: 459(120):335/15/16. What does each number stand for? My guess is that 450 stands for feet AGL; (120) stands for meters; 335 is direction; 15 is wind speed; 16 is degrees Celcius. If this is not correct, is there any documentation where I can find this info. In the past, (and in the pdf.doc users manual) it shows Winds aloft listed as: (HOU) 3K:332910 6K:323408 etc. which is consistent with an actual Winds Aloft report.Thank you for your next reply in advance.Sincerely,Troy S. March 27, 200323 yr Troy,WMO = World Meteorological OrganizationTo quickly ID a WMO code: In your ActiveSky folder there is a text file called wmo.txt. Open in with Notepad. Go to Search/Find and enter the ID number and click on Find Next. The information will be shown. You are right on with the translation of the data! Meters are included because these are worldwide data.In a near future release, the Winds Aloft window is reorganized a bit and a brief translation key is added. You should find the new format easier to read.A great site for all types of weather information is: http://aviationweather.gov/It is the official weather site and you can spend hours exploring, if you are into "weather".If you have any more questions ask away!Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support
March 27, 200323 yr Commercial Member Hi,Just to clarify, the old US FS winds aloft system is completely different from the new International WMO system. The stations are not the same... rarely will you have an FD station also be a WMO station. FD stations are simply airports which a forecast is created from. Soundings are actual air readings from the WMO location (not a forecast).-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
