Real world winds aloft / temperatures?

Featured Replies

HiI've been comparing FS Meteo and WX RE V1.6 a lot of late. Both pieces of software promise real world winds aloft but they don't provide the same winds for the same place at the same time, which leads me to question which is actually correct. Also, I'm not sure whether aloft temperatures are real world or whether they are just simulated as I continuously get very suspect temperatures, compared to what I should be getting according to wind/temperature aloft charts, in some cases as much as 15 degrees cooler.Anyone care to comment?

Hi!Sure I'll comment..I am not familiar with FSMETEO's winds sources or processing details. But wxRE uses a variety of simulated and real-world data depending on the area you are flying in and your options. It is always difficult to compare conditions represented in the sim to actual real-world data. Real-world chart data is usually provided in FORECASTS and can vary from actual conditions. Actual upper-air soundings are more accurate (which wxRE uses) but the availability of these reports can be limited.Descrepencies of actual conditions compared to forecasts is a real-world occurance and we do try to intelligently simulate this in wxRE. I don't believe any other add-on does this. Something else to consider. As to what is actually more realistic, I am of course biased, but the entire focus of wxRE is realism and this was a major aspect of design. My tests give satisfying results to me, but that of course is subjective... I am CMEL and ~400 hrs so I try to compare this to real world experiences.Temperatures... They can be simulated if you are out of range of an aloft station or in OFFLINE mode with v1.6 (v1.7 adds offline download capability). Sometimes they are a little off. 15 deg is a bit much - are you able to duplicate this? Perhaps were out of range of a station and got simulated temps that happened to vary quite a bit that day.I hope this helps, and offer to look into any descrepancies you can come up with.. the quest is realism and there is always room for improvement!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

DamianThanks very much for you're response. I think I will be able to duplicate the problem, I'll post some screenshots later on today. Thanks again,
