1.7 (edited subject line) - timeouts

Featured Replies

HiSince upgrading to version 1.7, I cannot download - keep getting error message, 11 times over the last 4 days. I notice I'm not alone with this bug.As I no longer can use the program, when can I expect a remedy.thanksBob

Bob,The problems are with the lengthly auto-download of over 5MB of data when in OFFLINE mode. The server has not been cooperative the past few days. If you get a timeout error THE PROGRAM WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE but with possible incomplete winds aloft data. If you want complete winds data you will have to wait for a successful download or manually do it. This problem has been going on for 4 days with the server, and if it remains then I guess we'll have to find another source entirely (no other source exists currently though). You didn't specify if you were using online or offline, what your error message was, or give any details as to your problem. Again this server issue DOES NOT AFFECT normal operation of all other functions - only the completeness of SOUNDING DATA for upper winds. If no sounding data is downloaded it will use simulation. Please let me know your details, and check my other posts on this subject, this has been covered many many times over the past few days.. Damian,Not to sound terse but I think so many of your users are experiencing download timeouts that you should realize things are just not working with 1.7 like they should. If you are selling a product that advertises international winds data retrieval capability, it should work reliably and consistantly. I personally do not feel this is the case with your choice of WMO servers. I think a private server for your program is the only viable alternative at this point and your current online source is a total compromise. Global aloft data is also pretty spotty with the 1.7 release. In short: future success of activesky = reliable, private server current activesky = rolling the dice, keeping fingers X'dI urge you to address this ongoing problem as I do enjoy the other features AS offers. I do not think telling your customers to simply keep trying to download time after time or simply letting the winds be simulated during server probs is a very professional solution as I'm sure you do not either :) Just my 2 pennies.

Thanks for your thoughts,But you seem to think I have CHOSEN to make things the way they are, and that I knew there were server problems before release?Private wx server is something I am working on, I have stated MANY MANY TIMES before. This CANNOT happen overnight and IS NOT CHEAP. We are talking at least $10K for startup equipment and internet connection, and at least $2-5K per month after that to maintain these servers in multiple locations.THERE IS ONE AREA ONLY THAT HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY THE SERVER PROBLEMS WHICH ARE OUT OF MY CONTROL:OFFLINE WINDS ALOFT DOWNLOAD COMPLETENESSWhere now have I falsy advertised? Online mode is working GREAT right? OFFLINE MODE requires 5MB of download.. let me ask, how many times do you have 5MB error free downloads on the internet without using a download manager? Read your license.rtf, it explains my responsibility for the internet and public server condition (none). You seem to think I am doing nothing about this and am just telling people "its ok, its not a problem".. Obviously if you have read my posts you will realize that I am working on this, and it is of key concern. But of course it all depends on the server. If the server fixes itself tomorrow then is this an issue at all? The server(s) have gone out before, and this is the longest they've ever gone.I hope you see my position and realize that I take this seriously and am working my *** off trying to make everyone happy! If not, please send me an e-mail and I will be more than happy to detail all the things I have been working on and testing in this regard.Thanks!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Wow. I don't comprehend what I said wrong, I was merely offering my personal opinion on how you can improve your program. As you say though you are not responsible for the server reliability, it is indeed so written in the fine print. You are not obligated to offer a solution or program update either. Peace, live long and prosper.
