How does FS9 ATC determine active runway?

Featured Replies

The procedure for using AS2004 is to start the flight with the clear weather theme, alt-tab to the desktop to start AS, which sets the weather in FS9, then return to FS9. Now, will FS9 change the active runway based on the updated wind direction? Seems like more often than not, when the winds would tend to favor runways like 18L ATC at DFW continues to use 36R. I'm wondering if 36R gets selected initially because the clear weather theme has zero wind, and FS9 will not change it once the weather has been updated by AS2004.

Yes, if you give FS time it will.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

Here's a couple of tricks that may help you get ATC to use the right runway immediately.Start FS9 in the Create Flight screen. Select your departure location. Then, start AS2004. Once AS2004 has loaded weather, start your flight. This way, AS2004 will set the weather almost immediately after your flight is loaded.I think that changing the time may help reset ATC. It does seem to reload AI traffic, at least. As a last resort, you can start your flight in FS9, start AS2004, let it set the weather, then save your flight with the weather set. Then, shut down AS2004 and FS9 and restart using the normal procedure, except don't set the Clear Weather theme. This way, your saved flight will have the current weather, so ATC should get things right from the start.Dave

After starting AS2004 I always change the time in FS9. It seems that any change to the FS9 time will reset the AI aircraft and they will begin to use the correct runways based on the weather.

I usually load a flight plan after setting up the weather and allow FS to change my location, even though it is usually to the same parking place that the plane is in - this has the same effect of reloading AI traffic, which changes the active runway. Using the world, go to airport and selecting the same place that you are has the same effect. I'd imagine that there's a hot key that could be assigned to reload AI traffic? Maybe that's sufficient? At any rate, it works.sg
