Strong wind shifts yesterday...

Featured Replies

hi all,did a quick flight yesterday evening (1900Z) from Zurich to Vienna...didn't change any settings (either as2004 or fsuipc) to my previous flights...positive comment:no sudden cloud changes unitl i had to abort the flight beacause of very strong wind shifts.problem:more or less after takeoff, i had windshifts which were getting sronger and stronger up to FL320...almost every minute not only the windspeed changed (> 30kts) but also the direction (from headwind to tailwind, then back)...didn't see this before. shortly after Munich i had to abort the flight, because i had constant overspeed or stall messages...anything special yesterday with the weather server or winds aloft?again, i was pleased+impressed with the realistic cloud transitions.will replicate the flight tonight and see what happens.cheers, harald heidinger/loww

Harald, funny you should mention it, buit I had pretty much the same problem the day before (1/20/04) from LSZH to LOWW and also from LSGG to EGLL.On the LSZH to LOWW flight, wind speed and direction en route remained pretty much constant, but I still hat quite extreme speed fluctuations from Mach 0.68 to Mach 0.89. The PMDG 737NG autopilot just barely managed to handle that, so I was able to complete the flight. The LSGG to EGLL flight was more of the same, only worse. IN the first portion of the flight, until about Paris, I also hat extreme instant wind direction changes of 180 degrees at 55kts. Imagine what a change from a 55kt almost direct tailwind into a 50kt direct headwind does to the paxes! Barf bags anyone? ;-)In both cases a flight plan was loaded with route based wind smoothing enabled, FSUIPC 3.14 with minimum weather defaults. AS2004 Setting were those recommended for Alpha 2.It also seems to me that I Have most of those severe shifts over central Europe, fewer over North America.Best RegardsMax (Bern, LSZB)http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg

Exactly the reason I'm paranoid about buying this program, sheesh, too many folks having the wind transition problem over and over. The ONLY reason I would want Activesky in the first place is to fix the screwy winds aloft in FS9. Either this add-on fixes it or it doesn't. Looks like the latter right now. Honestly I think the most realistic weather you can achieve in FS9 at this time is to use FS9's own default online weather and just disable winds aloft downloads. Ken Salter (one of the moderators here at the AVSIM forums) had the same problem as you guys with Activesky winds killing him and suggests the same thing, just disable winds aloft altogether. Not realistic but neither is getting creamed on every flight by the wind shifts (sic).

Hi Max,maybe we encounter severe wind shifts or some clear air turbulences :-eek over europe here in the past days ...will ask an austrian a340 pilot if he or his colleagues reported severe wind shifts up there..who knows whats really goeing up there! :-roll remember the fokker 70 goeing down near munich recently due to severe icing...still, i never had this extreme wind shifts in speed and heading before since as2004 is out...cheers,harald / loww
