AS2004 misreporting Alaska Airport codes?

Featured Replies

I just installed AS2004 (have been a happy camper with ActiveSky wxRE). The first time I load it up, I'm on the ground in Palmer, AK, ICAO code PAAQ. AS2004 reports the weather at the nearest location using the code "KPAQ." Now in the Alaska Supplement, Palmer Muni goes by PAQ and PAAQ, but not by KPAQ. Doing a "Get" in AS2004 on PAAQ works, and turns up the same metar as shown for KPAQ.Is there a fix to this? I read the FAQ, and searched the forum here on "Alaska" and found nothing. In the grand scheme of things, this is not a major deal. But it ought to be an easy fix. And for payware, I would expect to see it fixed.-Basil

I was just about to post a message on this myself. Doing some VFR flying in Alaska the other night and observed the same thing.

Hi All,User Glenn saw this after the release in December. He and Damian exchanged information about it back then. I can't remember the exact outcome, but Damian is aware.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

Hi Basil,KPAQ is an "FS9 psuedo station" used for classifying Palmer as a US airport during its METAR processing. We do not have the ability to remove these stations (otherwise you'd get clear wx or possibly incorrect FS9-interpolated wx in that area). The stations themselves are usually located within .5nm of the actual (PAAQ in this case). The wx, however, should be the same at the PAAQ AND KPAQ stations... can you confirm? Thanks!Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyhttp://www.hifisim.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg

Yes, the weather -- e.g. the metar -- was the same. So you are saying that this is something attributable to FS9, and not specifically to AS2004?

Hi Basil,Well, yes.FS9 has 6,000+ weather station zones. Each station zone is 2nm radius around the station. For approximately 2000 airports, there are redundant stations at the same airport with a different station ID. Most major Alaska Airports have this, for example.FS9 includes these extra stations so that it can properly receive weather and interpret it from its own weather source, which may provide it under several different IDs (for example, KPAQ metar may be sent by jepp servers, not PAAQ).AS2004 doesn't require these pseudo stations, as all source METAR information routines are handled intelligently. But these stations still exist in FS9. If we choose to ignore them, you'll get 1/2 your airport with one kind of weather and the other 1/2 totally clear. One station gets set but the other doesn't. So we recognize this closeness of stations in AS2004, assume they are tied in together, and duplicate the METAR report (before processing). After that, AS2004 simply reports the closest of these 6000+ stations, and displays the METAR string (sometimes automatically generated). Remember that the AS2004 closest station report is just that.. closest.. and it does not indicated that it is "changing weather" to that new value. It only is reporting the closest station's ID and METAR.So everything is working correctly here as far as I can tell. When you are closer to KPAQ station than PAAQ (probably changes at the center of the field), KPAQ gets reported as closest. Either way the weather is consistent and working properly.I suppose later on we could add a list of stations to "ignore" in the report to make this less confusing, but for now it is highly informative and important to know WHICH FS9 station is closest when comparing weather, troubleshooting, etc.. Perhaps an option. I will put that on the list..Thanks Basil!-Damian
