Temp rises again once over 40k feet??

Featured Replies

Hi all,Firstly i am still running ver 1.91 as, until I upgrade my system it is pointeless me getting FS2004. So you guessed it, I am still with good ol' FS2002.Strange thing happenning with the temp... & has been doing this consistantly for about 1.5 months now. I happen to like zipping around the globe at very high speeds, so i tend to be flying at 70,000ft & above. As i climb, i notice the temp dropping quite nicely, so that by the time I'm into the 30's k feet, the outside temp is -50 - to even -70 even .. Nice & cold :-)However as i climb further the temp starts rising again .. so that it is sometimes only -5 outside, or even as warm as ZERO! or +1 degree. outside. (Before you ask, i;m not being dumb & measuring my kinetic heating etc. thats about 650-800 degrees *grin*. This is the still OUTSIDE air temp. This surely is wrong!??????? at 75000ft the outside airtemp being warmer that on the ground??As stated, this has ONLY STARTED RECENTLY, before... once the temp got down to -55 ot -65 or so, it would stay there, or even drop a little more, but NEVER go up...So whats changed???? It must be something to do with the system that is feeding ActiveSky, as i am running an older version, & i have seen a post talking about a similar prob in AS2004 .... can it be fixed???CheersAl

Not sure Al.JimActiveSky Support

Hmmmmm ... a bit of a head scratcher..Will it be investigated though?, Should be easy to replicate the problem though.... just use a plane that can fly high .. eg U2 etc....Get a decent OAT gauge that can display in both F & C ,,,, then just climb..... You'll see the temp drop, then once over 40,000ft it starts to rise ....by the time you're at 70,000 or so, it's Tshirt time outside!!!!Good Luck Al

Hi !Once above the tropopause and flying in the stratosphere the temperature starts to rise again gradually (although not at the same rate as it cools gradually in the troposphere). I don't know how drastic your changes are but it is not unheard of to find temperatures up to 20+ celsius in the stratosphere as the temperature is mainly determined by the difference between in- and outgoing radiation.Below a quick recap of different levels taken from http://ds9.ssl.berkeley.edu/LWS_GEMS/3/layers.htmCheers,ViljamiThe Different Levels of the Atmosphere are:Troposphere: This is the lowest atmospheric layer and is about seven miles (11 km) thick. Most clouds and weather are found in the troposphere. The troposphere is thinner at the poles (averaging about 8km thick) and thicker at the equator (averaging about 16km thick). The temperature decreases with altitude.Stratosphere: The stratosphere is found from about 7 to 30 miles (11-48 kilometers) above the Earth

Also Al,The speed at which you are moving makes a difference also. I used slew mode and temps matched up to the data in wxRE. Not really sure if anything more can be done. Damian will be back in a few days and he will see all the posts and have the final say!Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

Cheers Jim, If Damina can have a look that would be grand. As i said, all i know is that it never used to happen... Whereas now, I can be at high altitudes 70000+ & have the temp at zero, whereas at 35000ft it can be -70 deg CAll the best.Al

Hi, This had gone a bit stale, but am still curious as to what is going on, & a fix.Damian, Jim, any answers???Viljami .. this is not what's gonig on here, After loading up AS.... In the Winds aloft box, it clearly shows a series of altitude levels going up to over 100,000 feet, (& in meters). Next to these levels are the wind dir, speed & the Outside Air Temp. in Deg C ??For example, Wind Aloft could be reporting that at 66,000ft the temp is -63, at 77,000ft the temp is a degree lower -64.However INSIDE the sim flying at these altitudes, my OAT gauge has RISEN from what was maybe -65 or -70 @ 35,000, up to only -13 or even warmer,0 degs at 70,000ft, when Winds Aloft is saying it should be below -63 etc.!!!?Even wierder, pausing the sim & popping into the 'avanced weather' settings, to see what has been set, the temp is showing +150F !!!!!In FACT I'm running AS RIGHT NOW:[65831(20040):300/18/-60][76212(23200):285/30/-63](Cut'n'pasted from AS)Yet in the sim... my OAT is only -13!!!!!So basically the Sim is NOT doing as it is told by ActiveSky...IF i don't use AS, & just run the simple inbuilt weather download tool that comes with the sim, the OAT BEHAVES itself... showing temps that get colder as i go higher & stay there. So what's going on????As mentioned before, this has only been going on for a few months. Ever since i think when there was the last series of download problems out of AS control, After that was sorted out, this temp issue started. Before this, AS & the sim used to run fine & behave itself. Look forward to an anwser to thisAl

I've deliberately taken some readings this time, so that i can relay just how crazy this is getting.Software:FS2002, AS 1.91, FSUIPC 2.975No config files have been altered, edited, changed or overwritten in Months.Cruising in my high altitude aircraft, @ 75000ft, use the default FS2002 weather download with aloft active, OAT is showing -65cActivate AS, it loads & shows download complete. In the Aloft window it is showing -65c at 67k feet & -66c at 78k feet. However pop back into the sim & unpause it, the temp leaps to +11c !!!!!!! this is stupid!Pop out of the sim & shut down AS, back into the sim & reset the weather & reload using the inbuilt weather downloader, & it is back to what was mentioned above.Reset the weather, restart AS .. back into the sim & hey presto, the same silly readings. as shown above.... So i make a decent.... & the temp starts rising, until showing +63c & 10k feet, +65 @9,000ft, +66c @ 8,000ft, I get to 4000ft & the OAT is SEVENTYFOUR DEGREES!!!! (167F as shown in the weather settings) Sorry but this is utter b*ll*cks! ...I'm flying over south east England & the OAT at Ground is about 1 degree at the moment. So, flying at 4000ft, shut down AS, reset the weather & perform a reload using the inbuilt feature, & low & behold the OAT is back down to a reasonable & realistic -7c .Indeed when noting the temps in AS's Aloft window, the temps it say's it is going to use, are close to what the inbuilt weather downloader actually gets. except when AS is running the show, it all goes mad now!..As mentioned in previous posts, when assending, the temp does drop nicely to about -65 or so @ 35k feet, ... but then starts to rise again to unrealistic warmth when reaching the higher cruise altitudes.Sorry but I don't accept from other posters that this is 'normal' at all, but in fact think that the downloaded data that AS uses, has somehow changed in recent months, thus ballzing up what is going on.Looing forward to a fix!Al

So your saying the known meteorological occurance of an inversion (temperature warming with height) is not true? WOW. My meteorology degree will be burned tonight! How sad. The strongest inversion, from the tropopause to stratusphere averages anywhere between 300mb (FL300 roughly) to 150mb. So it very well could have been an inversion. Inversions can happen at any altitude, on any location on the earth. Usually associated with high pressure, or upper level convergence causing subsidence.

Al,Some information: This morning I e-mailed Damian pointing out this topic to him.NOAA was the data source and still is the data source. If I find anything out, I'll be sure to post it here.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

Uh... Josh, did i say that??? don't think so!!Perhaps you're trying to imply that i am stupid & not correctly repoting what i'm witnessing in the sim? What i DID say was that flying at an altitude of just 4000ft over the south of England, (WHEN IT IS IN FACT SNOWING OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW), was showing an OAT Temperatue of +75 Degrees!!! and at an altitude of 75000ft was +11 degrees. But after shutting down AS, & using the sims' built in weather download, the temps snap back to more natural realistic measurements.I don't really care whether you have a degree in crochet, pleasue don't 'wave it in my face' like some sort of superiority trophy!, show me snow forming at 75% the boiling point of water. So what I'm talking about is very unusal behaviour between what AS is displaying in its control window, versus what is ACTUALLY being rendered in the sim as weather....Jeez people get so touchy.Jim, thankyou for the reply & good luck in spotting anything. Are their any config files i can email you to help?RegardsAl

Thanks Al,Post your wxRE.ini file please. A cut and paste will be just fine. Let's ALL keep this civil OK! Most posters are just trying to help each other out.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

Hi Al,Thanks for the input.. I am looking into this. It is true it is common for the temps to stabilize above the tropopause and into the stratosphere, but your experience with temps at lower altitudes does not seem right.First things first, note that FS OAT is always reported wrong when you have any airspeed above zero. You have to hit the slew button "Y" or slow to a dead stall to get the actual reading. It is best found by using Weatherset (from FSUIPC) which will show you exactly what it is (regardless of the FS errors of temp display).I am not sure how you are testing the temps each time, but if you could please supply me with some screenshots noting the error (while slewed) and perhaps a screenshot of the Weatherset current wx readout would be very helpful (along with the ASwxRE screen to show the data that is being fed). Please send this to [email protected] for your help tracking this down - I have not confirmed a problem yet but with more information hopefully we'll be able to find what is wrong and/or offer a fix.-Damian
