August 24, 200421 yr Hi,I have been using ActiveSky2004 (B140) for about a week now. The program is great and I have found it increases the realism of FS enormously.I have had some trouble obtaining consistent results with the 'Weather Tracking' page on the ActiveRadar display in particular with the TAF display. A couple of examples tonight using downloaded data: (20040824-15Z): EPKK (Krakow, Poland) the TAF displayed in the 'Closest Station Report' or 'Custom Station Report' in the ActiveSky Window -> (EPKK 241300Z 241524 16012KT 9999 FEW040 BECMG 2022 9999 SCT033 TEMPO 2124 24014G24KT 6000 TSRA BKN020CB) was quite different to the TAF displayed in the 'Flight Tracking' area of the ActiveRadar display -> (EPKK 24100Z 241812 06008KT 9999 FEW040 BECMG 2022 24008KT 9999 SCT033 TEMPO 0012 6000 TSRA BKN020CB). Nothing that I did seemed to make any difference.EPKT (Katowice, Poland) the TAF displayed in the ActiveRadar display seemed to be completely corrupted -> (EPKT 4000 HZ TMPM NUCHKT 3000 HZ/FU SCT018 SC09 &)('080)...... etc) whereas the TAF display in the ActiveSky Window seemed to be correct -> (EPKT 241300Z 241524 16014KT 9999 FEW040 BECMG 1820 9999 SCT033 TEMPO 2024 22014G24KT 6000 TSRA BKN020CB)Other airports eg YSSY (Sydney, Australia), the TAF in the ActiveSky Window appeared to match that in the ActiveRadar Window. In each of the above cases, the contents of the ActiveSky window display matched the contents of the downloaded and saved XXXXXXXX-XXZ.dat file.Is it possibly something corrupted in my setup or is there possibly a problem with some airports? Thanks,Steven.
August 24, 200421 yr Hi Steven and Welcome,Active Radar only reads the METAR not the TAF, I believe, on the Tracking Screen. Let me try it and I'll get back here.Edit: Yes as far as I know only METARs unless I am missing something. Can you point me in the direction where you are seeing TAFs in AR?Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
August 24, 200421 yr Thanks Jim,Setup departure and arrival airport in 'Planning' page of ActiveRadar:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/89061.jpgNow go to 'Tracking' page of ActiveRadar. No obvious problem here, seems to reasonably match downloaded data:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/89062.jpgNow on 'Tracking' page, selected DEP and TAF. TAF for EPKT seems to be corrupted:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/89063.jpgI was curious as to why the details were different in the 'Local Information' and 'Flight Tracking - DEPARTURE' section and I have just worked out why. I believe the lattitude/longitude for EPKT is slightly out in the ActiveRadar AirportDB.dat file - ActiveSky shows EPKT/1nm, ActiveRadat shows EPKT/14nm. I changed the coordinates in the AirportDB.dat file and the details in the 'Local Information' and 'Flight Tracking' become the same. (Changing this file doesn't fix the problem above of the corrupted TAF display.)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/89064.jpgFinally, the TAF for EPKK in the ActiveRadar display is totally different to the one in the ActiveSky window. The weather seems to be similar, but the times are many hours different. As mentioned previously, other airports eg YSSY have returned consistent TAFs in both displays.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/89065.jpgThanks for your help,Steven.
August 25, 200421 yr Hi Steve,Thanks for all that work. I learned how to pull up a TAF in AR!I agree with you on the EPKT data being corrupt. In the snapshot it looks good, but AR messed it up.At EPKK the time length of the TAF gets reported wrong. Usually they are for 6 hours. Don't know why it is 8+ hours.I suggest that you watch. If things do not improve then do a uninstall and reinstall. If after that, this keeps happening, then we'll ask Damian to take a look.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
August 25, 200421 yr Thanks Jim,I have uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSky as you suggested and the situation seems to be the same.I think you are right when you mention the connection to the forecast length in hours of the TAF. From a quick random sample there seems to be a pattern to the TAFs that display correctly in ActiveRadar and those that do not. Just a few examples that I have found tonight (20040825-13Z):9 hour long TAFs - EDDF,EDDC,EDDN,EPPO,EPWA,EPKK,EPKT,EGLL (Times wrong/Corrupted) 11 hour long TAF - FAJS (Times wrong/Corrupted)18 hour long TAF - LKPR (Seems to be correct)23 hour long TAF - YMML (Seems to be correct)24 hour long TAFs - KORD, YSSY, NZCH (Seem to be correct)Since the TAFs appear to always display correctly in the ActiveSky window and seem to sometimes not display correctly in ActiveRadar, I am wondering if this might be just a 'Weather Tracking' display issue with ActiveRadar or is there the possibility that sometimes the weather injected into the simulator might also be corrupted?Best regards,Steven.
August 25, 200421 yr Commercial Member Hi Steven,The TAF data is not actually sent from AS to AR. AR picks this up on its own via a public source. Since the sources and methods are different, and AR doesn't natively support short-term TAFs (i.e. EDDF, EDDC), there will be a discrepency at these locations (and possibly others). We are working on a new replacement gauge/module for FS which will be much more integrated with AS, but this is a ways out, for the next version. August 26, 200421 yr Damian, Jim,Thanks both for your replies. AR getting the TAFs on its own independently of AS - now the reference in the docs about the requirement to have an online connection for TAF display makes sense! I'll be looking forward to the new version. Keep up the great work.Best regards,Steven.
