August 31, 200421 yr Does anyone know the cause / cure for the checkerboard tile pattern in the clouds depicted below? It doesn't happen all the time but is very annoying. I am using AS2004.5 latest build and the FSW FPS Fix clouds.Thanks!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/89731.jpg

August 31, 200421 yr Thanks for the reply Jim!I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem on my end.
September 1, 200421 yr Commercial Member Hi Mike,To go into a bit more detail on this issue... FS9 uses 16km x 16km blocks to draw clouds. When overcast stratus clouds are called, FS9 goes through several overcast stratus variations based on the cloud height and altitude levels to find a certain .CLD cloud scenario to render in a particular block. Sometimes the variation .CLDs called have hard edges and do not blend properly with other surrounding blocks. Overcast enhancement can amplify this effect since there is more opacity to the given block render.Turning off overcast enhancement can help but will not eliminate the problem entirely. If you feel like experimenting, you can edit your Cloud_Art_Files.xml (located in FS9WeatherClouds) and attempt to exclude possible problematic .CLD variations from the overcast 8/8 stratus coverages. This .xml can be edited while FS9 is running, between cloud renders (wx set/refreshes), so you can try new settings pretty easily. Make sure to backup your .xml before making changes.FWIW, we have been working on new cloud models, textures and .xml configurations for the next version of AS which will not only help with this issue, but will bring much more variation and realism to the visual cloud environment.Hope that helps! September 1, 200421 yr Thanks for the reply Damian!I think I will leave the tinkering to the experts. You and Pete Dowson have done a great deal to enhance FS2004 (not to mention fix MS bugs). I'll look forward to seeing your clouds!
