September 9, 200421 yr Hi all,I am very intriged about what ActiveSky can do, and I have been reading at this forum and at the HiFi site, but what I can not extract is if it will suit my specific needs. My setup is as follows: -Main Fs PC with Dualhead Nvidia 4200 and Nvidia TNT2. The 4200 displays my cockpit instruments on two screens, the TNT2 has my overhead panel. This pc is the wideview server and runs FSHotseat and Gamecommander 2 as well.-FS PC with Matrox Parhelia for displaying the outside view on three screens. This PC is no wideview client. Both FS computers have registered FSUIPC installed -Laptop which runs FsCommander in conjunction with wideview client. All works like a charm, but the standard FS weather starts to bother me!I am wondering if it is possible to install AS on the laptop, thus serving both my FS PC's with the same weather at the same time.Is this possible or am I thinking in the wrong direction?Your answers will be greatly appreciated!Jack
September 9, 200421 yr Hi Jack,That is quite a setup! Do you a link or a pic where I could see it all in action?I am not real knowledgeable in networking setups, but if WideFS will sync the 2 FS PCs and the laptop has Internet then it could work. I would wait and see if others have more knowledge than I.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
September 9, 200421 yr Hi Jack,Like Jim I do not have a set-up as complex as yours but I do run 2 computers with Widefs so the following may help.AS2004 can be run on an Internet connected PC and send the weather to a second PC connected via Widefs. My limited understanding of Wideview is that it can display outside views of FS while the Wideview server is displaying, say, the flightdeck. So I would suggest a simple test. Set some weather in FS on the wideview server and set an outside view on the Wideview client. If you can see the same weather on the client as on the server then you know the environment is the same on both computers and that the server is 'delivering' weather information to the client. That being the case, and knowing that AS2004 can deliver weather information over Widefs, I would *think* that AS2004 will do what you want.HTH
September 10, 200421 yr Hi Again,My question would be if WideFS will link 3 computer together, his laptop to the 2 FS PCs?See, most users link 2 computers and things work out well!JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
September 10, 200421 yr I don't think so Jim, not in the configuration he has.My understanding is that you have one Wideserver but any number of clients. In the normal 2 computer set-up the server is on the PC running FS and the client is the one running AS2004, RW etc - if you like the wrong way round for the above set-up.Maybe posting the question in Pete Dowson's forum, and the Wideview forum (if they have one) would provide more help.Rgds
September 10, 200421 yr Th WideFS and AS machine would be the laptop and the 2 other machine would be the clients.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
September 11, 200421 yr Hi guys,Thanks for your thoughts so far! It's starting to be a bit confusing now.Did a little brainstorming about what's really going on in my setup:-My main FS machine runs wideview server, WideFs server, FSUIPC, FSHotseat, Gamecommander 2, Atomic time synchronizer. Has Internet connection.-My second FS Machine runs wideview client, FSUIPC, Atomic time synchronizer (pointed to the synchronizer on the first machine which acts as timeserver). Has Internet connection-My Laptop only acts as a WideFs client, and runs FS Commander. There is no further FS software on this machine. Has Internet connection.FSCommander (http://www.fscommander.com/) can, besides flightplans, also create weather, and sets this weather on the Main FS Machine (by WideFS), which is then updated through WideView to the Second FS machine. This weather is very unrealistic: Appears and disappears very suddenly, en does not create very realistic clouds. My idea was to install ActveSky onto the laptop, create weather there, and let WideFs transfer it to the Main FS machine, where WideView will update it to the second FS machine (once every 5 mins.)This seems to be possible, according to documentation. On the main FS machine the weather will not even be visible, because it's only displaying instruments, and no outside view. Only sending the weather to the second FS Machine is not an option I guess, because then it could happen that I fly through a major thunderstorm seen on the second FS machine, but have no effects on the plane like turbulence for instance.I have no use for the active radar or other modules so they are not important. In fact: do I have to install them?So the question is: should Active sky be running on the main FS Machine, or can it be installed on the laptop and manage the weather from there? WideView now handles the weather transfer to the second FS Machine, but maybe it is possible to let ActiveSky serve both my FS Machines, so I can disable the weather update feature in Wideview, and thus reduce the workload for Wideview?I hope this is not to confusing?BTW, here is a link to some pictures of my setup. Far from ready, but already fun enough!http://home.wanadoo.nl/j_both/Cockpit2/page_01.htmRegards, Jack
September 11, 200421 yr Hi Jack,You are one crazy person and the proof is in those pictures!AS goes on the WideFS server machine which should be the non-FS machine, for you the laptop. My question is the same as yours: Can WideFS serve 2 client machines?Radar module does not need to be installed.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
September 12, 200421 yr Hello Jim,I see you also read my post at Pete Dowson's Forum.Still brainstorming about the possibility's, but I can't sort out the mess in my head.-ActiveSky is capable of running on a non FS machine yes?-It will then transfer weather to an FS machine via WideFS right?-Do you have to point AS to the FS machine, for instance by typing in the IP address?-Following that, can ActiveSky address more than one machine??I now have WideFS and WideView server on my primary FS Machine. Communication between my the primary and Secondary FS machine runs through WideView.Communication between the laptop and the primary FS machine runs through WideFS. As Pete Dowson states (and I should have known that, and Vulcan mentioned it already in his answer), WideFS server is capable of serving up to 256 clients. So it should be possible to make the secondary FS machine a client too!So I have asked him if WideFs will or will not interfere with the communication already running via WideView between the primary and secondary FS Machine. If this would not cause any problems AND ActiveSky is capable of addressing more than one PC, than (just my two cents) it should all be possible and I should give it a try.The reason I am so picky about this is that all third party extra installed programs WILL eat framerates or system recources in one way or another, and since I have finally got my system up and running in a way that I can be satisfied with, I am a little afraid to just buy programs, install them and later find out that it does not do what I expected it to.I hope I did not cause you too much trouble......Thanks, Jack
September 12, 200421 yr Hi,Trouble?? Nah, just Pete's smart answer back to me. I've seen it before so it didn't take me by surprise.-ActiveSky is capable of running on a non FS machine yes?-It will then transfer weather to an FS machine via WideFS right?-Do you have to point AS to the FS machine, for instance by typing in the IP address?-Following that, can ActiveSky address more than one machine??Here are the four answers:1. Yes, with WideFS installed on the non FS machine.2. Yes.3. Installation
September 13, 200421 yr Hi Jim,Thanks for your clear answers. Though some of them seem to conflict with what Pete says in my post at his forum, but then again I might be misunderstanding. English is not my native language, Dutch is...Anyway, based on the knowledge I now have collected, I think I will go ahead and give it a try.Pity you guys do not have a "Try and Buy" version though ;-)As soon as I have a little more time, I'll start to fiddle around with the program a bit, and when results are being made, you're the first to know!Best regards, JackDelft, The Netherlands
September 13, 200421 yr Thanks Jack! Please follow Pete's advice!! I'll admit I don't know much about set-ups such as yours.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
