August 26, 200520 yr HiA happy ASV user here with no problems.I have a question though regarding the weather conditions at the arrival airport and how that affects the rwy in use for that airport. When I start a flight (having loaded a flight plan, refreshed the weather and AI traffic), I note down the ARR airport conditions. There are times when I arrive at my destination and the conditions have changed of course, but the selection of rwy in use by ATC is not clear. My question is: Is the rwy in use at destination selected according to the initial weather conditions (ie when I start the flight), or does the ATC determine which rwy will be in use when I get to a closer vicinity of the airport (say 100nm) ?For example say that the destination airport has rwy 36/18 with heading 360 and 180 respectively. If I get an initial METAR when I start the flight with winds at 100 degrees, but when I get closer to the airport the winds will be at 80 degrees, which rwy will be in use? Thanks in advanceKostis
August 26, 200520 yr I can't answer as to when ATC will switch runways, but do remember that many airports have preferential runways, so you will often find that you are landing and taking off with a tail wind. Heathrow is a classic example.Steve
August 26, 200520 yr So the only way to find which rwy is in use is when you're close enough to contact the tower (when flying VFR)?what do you mean by preferential rwy? Is it related to the airport's AFCAD file?Thanksk
August 26, 200520 yr It is a preferred rwy, which will be used even with a tail wind upto a specific amount. These details are usually available via Vatsim sites. EGLL is at http://www.vatsim-uk.org/Airport-Informati...cc/EGLL/rwy.asp.Steve
August 26, 200520 yr Hi Kiwi,I read your note this morning, but didn't have time to answer before work, until now.In general the runways are set when the initial conditions are loaded and ASV refreshes the AI. If you are flying enroute and notice that there has been a drastic wind shift at your destination, you can use the Refresh AI button to refresh the ATC system to recognize the wind shift. FS04 ATC is not dynamic enough to be able to recognize a wind shift and change on its own, so we need to help it out a bit by doing the refresh. In your example the 100 degree runway would be used. August 26, 200520 yr I thing FS9 can change the active rwy when the wind changes. I requested a landing in the canaries the other day and checked the atis which told me which rwy was in use, can't remember which, as there was no ils I had to fly over the airport in the opposite direction of the runway and then u turn and land when I requested landing on finals I was then told that the opposite runway was in use. On checking ASV the wind dir had changed and so FS9 changed the active runway.Regards
August 26, 200520 yr Last time I filed an IFR flightplan and ATIS told me that RWY 34 was in use. After setting up the plane I was ready to taxi (about 20 mins later) and Clearance told me to go to RWY 23 (I have ground updates ENABLED). Looks like ATC can handle changes in wind direction.
August 26, 200520 yr Hi All,I stand corrected!! Thanks for the experiences.Kiwi, maybe the wind shifts were too small for a runway change?Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Sales and Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg
August 27, 200520 yr Jim,Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure how the ATV engine works in FS for rwy selection, but your reply answered my question. I guess the "Refresh AI" option is the most realistic one as there have been cases when I'm instructed to land in rwys with 8kts tailwind. For example, yesterday LGAV was indicating winds 05007, yet when I got there the rwys in use were 21L/R.Kostis
