Transfer of downloaded data

Featured Replies

Jim,OK, moved to posting here rather than the general forum, as you suggested..I bought Active Sky 6 this morning and it's now on both my PCs (you remember you posted me in the general FS9 forum today about downloading data on my internet enabled PC and then using my firewire network to transdfer to my main FS PC?).I've updated the weather files online and now just want to check how many files I need to copy across to my FS PC to get it up to date. Could you tell me exactly which files I need to copy across (and overwrite I assume) each time I do this?If I've understood correctly at this early stage, I can either disable the supression ceiling or set it to 50000' on my non-internet FS PC? This only related to online updating, yes?Better print off the manual and have a good read now!Martin

I meant to say, I can see the file current_wx_snapshot.txt has been updated - but is that the only one I need to overwrite? Thanks again

Hi Martin,You almost have things correct so let's look at what you are going to do!1. The only setting on the Internet machine you need to worry about is the Online Updates option; you want that On.2. Start up the Internet copy and let things work. Then click on the Save Wx button. This saves the current weather as a .dat file. It is that one file that you want to move to the FS computer. I would suggest that you create a folder called Weather or something like that and put the file in there. From within your network you may be able to directly browse to this folder.3. Close down the Internet ASv6.4. Start the PC ASv6. This copy should be set with Online Updates Off. Now use the Load Wx button and a Browser style window will open. Navigate to the Weather folder and select the .dat file you just downloaded. After that you will have that current worldwide data ready to use with FS04. Remember that you can rename this file to anything you would like.5. Make all your ASv6 setting adjustments on the FS04 copy and save them. That is where the manual is going to help you!Let me know how things are going! Hi Jim, Thanks for the encouraging reply! Just flew from Gatwick to Paris, in rainy & then fogged-in weather. The change was quite noticeable, though it started raining again as I descended to Paris, which I hadn't set. Maybe I didn't do it quite right this first go...What I am working towards is to be able to gather a series of AS6 'favourites' that I can load quickly before a flight - I can see that this will be possible but I've not yet read up on that particular bit. Am I right in concluding that, as long as I am enabling AS6 at start up, I won't really ever need to go into FS9's own weather settings screens? Just a few other questions re. AS6, when you have time to answer them. In a day or two I will surely be more self-sufficient and bother you far less!:1. Does Active Sky Graphics only write to the main fs9 texture folder, or also to scenery/world/texture? Or others too?2. If I just open AS6 main screen, and leave all setitngs as they are, I assume I get the weather I set the last time I opened it and saved my weather choices?3. I assume that I use the 'Find wx' (was that what it was called?) page to choose more detailed weather settings: the main wx window just shows the basic templates, yes?, which I can tweak further in the Find Wx' options. 4. I have hundreds of saved flights, in the Flight Simulator Files folder, which I access by double-clicking on a shortcut to the .flt file I want to fly - this obviously starts FS9 then loads the flight automatically. The weather I have chosen (previous to installing AS of course) is set in those .flt files of course. What happens to the weather in those saved flights if I load up AS6, select the weather I want, then run the flt shortcut to start FS9 and my saved flight? Will the weather I set up in the AS screen over-ride the weather information written into the .flt file when I saved it?5. LASTLY!!! (At least for now :-) ) Just want to check I'm doing this right and my Gatwick-CDG flight wasn't a fluke! To set different weather at departure & destination (which is why I bought AS6 after all), I set up departure weather conditions in the Wx Configurator, then click 'Apply Now'; then set up the destination weather, click Apply Now again, then 'Install & Close'. Then I load my flight plan into AS - and then start FS9. Correct? (Or not?!).Well, I think I have learned a lot about Active Sky this afternoon (from zero to this), but still have LOTS to digest.Sorry for all the questions; but thanks for the answers, if & when you get the time, as I say.Regards,Martin
