July 9, 200619 yr Hello everyone,Here is a METAR report for Hong Kong:20007KT 160V230 9999 FEW010 OVC300 30/26 Q0999 NOSIGNo matter what, i cant get a thick cloud layer (the OVC300) to show, all i get is a few stratus at FL300, and i know that in real life it is actually a thick OVC layer.Anybody any ideas of how i could get that cloud layer to show properly?Ill post my .ini just incase://ASv6 configuration file Build 499[General]WindowPosX = 19740WindowPosY = 195DefaultWeatherFolder = F:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9ModulesASv6SuppressionCeiling = 10000SurfaceWindLimit = 10FS9Path = F:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9PersonalAppDataFolder = C:Documents and SettingsNathanial BakerApplication DataCloudLayerLimit = 5LocalSuppressionRange = 200MinimumVisibility = 0MaximumVisibility = 50LastPlanFolder = C:Documents and SettingsNathanial BakerMy DocumentsFlight Simulator FilesAutoVasFrequency = 30AutoVasStrength = 30TurbulenceFrequency = 90DefaultStartupLocation = VHHHDefaultGraphicsFullTheme = Wx-InfluencedDefaultGraphicsCirrusTheme = Wx-InfluencedAutoSubmitGraphicsTheme = FalseIncreasedWake = FalseDisableWindsAloft = FalseForcePrimaryServer = FalseForceSecondaryServer = FalseFavorCumulus = FalseForceRoutePressure = TrueForceLowestCeiling = FalseUnpauseOnReadyStatus = FalseDisableWriteThrottle = FalseDisableProcessThrottle = FalseForceTstormsWithCB = TrueAutoSetFSTime = TrueIgnoreFSLocationUntilReady = TrueAutoConvertPlanFiles = TrueAutoRefreshAI = TrueDisableVisGraduation = FalseForceRouteAloftTemp = TrueOfflinePlayback = FalseEnableVAS = TrueAutoGenVAS = FalseForceDestinationWeatherZone = TruePreventIcing = TrueOnlineUpdates = TrueExtendedDestinationWindsForce = FalseDisableAllGroundUpdates = FalseGlobalWrites = TrueDepictFS9HazeLayer = TrueExtendTstormLayers = TrueDisableDirectWindControl = FalseVoicePlayback = TrueLocalSuppression = TrueStartupSound = FalseDisableGroundUpdates = TrueUseProxyServer = FalseFogLayerGeneration = FalseUpdateSuppression = TrueOvercastEnhancement = TrueIgnoreFSReadyStatus = TrueFSUIPCWindSmoothing = TrueLimitSurfaceWinds = FalseLimitCloudLayers = FalseAutoGlobalWriteToggle = TrueRainWithTS = FalseDisableUpperLayerGeneration = FalseVisibilitySmoothing = TrueDisableMessages = FalseAutoTimeZoneDetection = TrueUpdateInterval = 10VATSIMData = FalseZuluConversion = 2AloftPredictability = 100WindDriftRate = 0MaxCloudThickness = 20000MinStratusSeparation = 29000TAFProcessing = FalseEnforceVisibilityLimits = TrueWakeTurb = FalseStartPaused = TrueUseSystemTime = TrueDisableCAVOKClouds = FalseProxyAddress = 192.168.2.2:80Thanks in advance,at
July 9, 200619 yr Hi,Just as an experiment lower the Suppression range to 100 and Ceiling to 2000.If that doesn't work I have a few more ideas!Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://dot.kelder.net:8080/fseconomy/
July 9, 200619 yr Hi,Were you within 2 miles of the station? In FS04 are 3D clouds at 100% and Coverage Maximum?Do you have Frames locked at a low number?Does this happen everywhere or just here?Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://dot.kelder.net:8080/fseconomy/
July 9, 200619 yr Hi,Were you within 2 miles of the station? Yes, 1 mile from the station. In FS04 are 3D clouds at 100% and Coverage Maximum? YesDo you have Frames locked at a low number? No, set to unlimitedDoes this happen everywhere or just here? EverywhereHope this helps,Nat
July 9, 200619 yr Hi,Without your Frame Rates locked, FS04 could be running out of resources and graphics are the first thing dropped. Start by locking at 25 and see what happens.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://dot.kelder.net:8080/fseconomy/
July 9, 200619 yr Hi,Still no luck im afraid :(After some playing around with the settings its seems to me that the Overcast layer appears when the layer is from Ground Level up to FL210, attached is a photo with this METAR:20007KT 160V230 9999 OVC200 30/26 Q0999 NOSIGBut above FL210 it seems to revert to just displaying a very thin stratus layer, which isnt a thick Overcast layer, attached is another photo.Hope this helps,Nat
July 10, 200619 yr Hi,Yes, same for me. I will point Damian to this.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://dot.kelder.net:8080/fseconomy/
July 10, 200619 yr Commercial Member Hi,Based on the conditions present in Aloft data as well as surface temperature in the METAR, there will be a certain altitude/temperature at which all moisture will be frozen, which results in Cirrus clouds (clouds composed of ice crystals). In this case it looks like 21,000ft. The only time you'll get cumulus above that level is in the case of a thunderstorm/cumulonimbus, where the moist warm air being driven upward will prevent freezing at high altitudes (for a while, until it either cools enough and starts downwards or cools more and freezes, creating wispy anvil cirrus formations at the top and/or hail). The other exception is some cumulus/startus levels with a base below the "completely frozen" level can have tops extending well beyond that. For a simple explanation and general heights of cumulus clouds, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumulus_cloud. You'll notice that they specify cumulus not occuring above 20,000ft but this is a general figure. In reality (and with ASv6) this varies. Stratus clouds are also limited to lower altitudes. So in conclusion, with AS you cannot get anything but cirrus to occur with a base that high, and cirrus are basically thin cloud layers that let light pass through (not your expected overcast). FS9 depicts cirrus with some limitations as well, in "patches" that only extend about 10sm visual range (never able to completely blanket the sky).Of course with FS9 it IS possible to create such high cumulus or stratus layers (and allow such with AS) but at this time we feel that because it is not a realistic scenario, time can be better invested elsewhere. If anyone feels differently, or has any more to add, please do chime in! We are always open to feedback and suggestions!Best, Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
July 10, 200619 yr Hi,Thanks for the quick reply, and a great explanation :) I think ive only seen these high cloud layers in METAR
