Mountain Weather?

Featured Replies

Hello again, just another quick question about our wonderful software, Is mountain weather simulated besides vas, such as mountain waves, mountain turbulence (such as rotors and other things caused by winds blowing off the side of a ridge) and just the other up-down side-to-side caused by the mountains obstructing the normal flow of air? The reason I ask is because mountain weather adds alot of complexity and excitement to a flightsim.

Hi Mike,Just a short answer before I go to bed, yes, the terrain will have an effect. Whether or not those exact effects are modeled, I am not sure.Thanks!Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Hi,The VAS system does take terrain and relative winds into consideration to compute a realistic up or downdraft scenario. For example, if you're coming up to a ridge (rising terrain below) and the wind is a headwind, you'll get a downdraft. As the ridge is passed it will transition to an updraft. The greater the wind speed + lower height above the terrain will result in greater up/downdraft effect. Unless the wind is fairly strong, such effects will normally be limited to about 3-4000ft above the terrain with the strength significantly decreasing the higher you go. This is all in addition to other random VAS events that can be triggered for general and subtle up/down wind effects.Best,
