High Resolution Earth Night Light texture released

Recommended Posts

Get your copy of the High Resolution Earth textures here on AVSIM.It's pretty detailed. Getting the largest map I could find on http://visibleearth.nasa.gov I made a high resolution level 8 of the Earths night lights and converted it for use in the newest version of Orbiter. You can litterally see small light specks on the ocean. Small islands.Heres a sample:earthlights.jpgIt makes orbiting over the dark side of the Earth fun! :)- Jim

Got it Jim. Thanks! I noticed when unpacking that the Earth-hires texture package for Orbiter has a 16 MB dark side. I did a quick switch between them but didn't see an obvious difference. Have you compared it to the one you made? Just curious.Peter http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/PeterR.gifBFU Forums ModeratorRenegade/Seawolf Design Group (RSDG)

http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/logo75t.gifBush Flying Unlimited"At home in the wild"Looking for adventure? It's not easy to tell the diffrence with night light textures, but if you make a few orbits and do some observations, you'll see lights in spots that didn't have a light before (like on a small island) and you can make out some land masses at night. This was made with a high resolution map of Earths night lights.

>I figured it must be better so I kept your texture installed.>;-) Thanks for the info!>>Peter http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/PeterR.gif>BFU Forums Moderator>Renegade/Seawolf Design Group (RSDG)>Some people may find it a bit of an "overkill" with the lights if the Night Light Level setting in the launchpad is set for the highest level (1). I suggest setting the level maybe half the light level setting (0.50), but it's best to try diffrent settings to get it just the way you like it. At the highest level, everything shows up, even small pixles of light in the middle of the ocean where an island exists. The map used for this texture is a very high resolution (8192x4096), very detailed view of the night side of Earth. As such, some areas of the map where large cities are located really shine. Someone even told me that you can actually make out land masses at night as if lit by moonlight. I can't really see it, but that maybe just my monitor settings. - Jim
