March 5, 200422 yr Just currious. Can you get a 64-bit system and install your current software and run it?I thought software had to be specifically written for this new platform? Thanks
March 6, 200422 yr Although the Athlon64 is a 64 bit CPU, it also can run 32 bit code very fast. At the moment it is a better platform for gaming than the Pentium 4. In addition to speed, my new AMD 64-bit system runs several 32-bit flightsims and other apps with perfect stability, (am running regular WinXP Home 32-bit OS). The fact that it is a 64-bit cpu is of no importance at this time. The advantage of AMD64 is this, unlike P4 there's no front side bus graphics interface which would slow framerates slightly. And the cpu's are cheaper with no price increase for mainboard or memory.By the way, P4's at 3+GHz with matched dual channel memory are very very close to their AMD competition.
March 8, 200422 yr If you have a Athlon64 or an Opteron processor you can get a Trial version of 64-bit XP from Microsoft.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/d...ads/upgrade.aspAllen
March 8, 200422 yr AlbatrossR, I am confused about there being "No" front side bus with the new 64 bit chip. There has to be some sort of channel or path for the data to flow in and out of the CPU, yes? Is AMD calling what is known as the FSB something else now? Also, how about the "heat"? About three to four years ago, I had an AMD CPU before they started calling them by the weird numbers and just said it was a 1.8 GHz or what ever. Those chips ran so hot (not over clocked) you needed cases with multiply fans to help cool them down. That was one reason I switched back to Intel and the fact they have a big plant here in the ABQ area so I felt like some of my money was staying local. I have a 2.8 GHz HT P-4 and so far, I have not really noticed any big performance gains with Hyper Threading. I suppose this might also be true with the 64 bit AMDs too till programs are written for them. It would interest to see what that new 64 bit OS from MS will do for your system. Finally, how does the cost of your 64 bit chip compare to a comparable P-4 HT Intel chip?Terry
