60.72 drivers

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,I just thought that I would post my experiences with the above drivers. On the driver forums they have been getting mixed reviews. Some people are swearing by them others are saying they are seeing problems with fog tables and CTD's.Anyway being an inverterate fiddler I couldn't resist giving them a try.So I created a restore point, uninstalled the old drivers via the add / remove program dialogue box and installed the 60.72's.First of all looking at the driver version panel, the first four files (display driver, miniport, open gl and display properties extension) are shown as version 52.16. The remaining files are shown as 60.72.Bear in mind these are leaked betas supposedly optimised for the next generation of NVidia cards due to be released shortly.Did they make a difference?Well for me yes! It's difficult to say exactly what's improved but the general impression is that the sim runs smoother (particularly during turns in cloudy skies).Top end frame rates are probably up by about 25% but average rates are probably 1 or 2 frames better. Don't get too excited about frame rates as I don't think you will notice a huge improvement but the smootheness of the sim has definitely improved. The other major difference I noticed was the overall quality of the display. The textures are sharper, the graphics look less drawn and more photorealistic (try the default startup at Seattle to see what I mean). There is far less shimmering in the foreground although it is still noticeable in the background (say beyond the 5 mile range).Any negative points?Well none so far.The sim has run for two hours without problems or crashes.I have tried a flight in light and heavy fog and, despite reported problems from elsewhere, it looked fine to me.So I will probably keep these unless something disastorous happens.Final comment - a decent improvement on the 50 series. My specs:P4 2.4 (o/clocked to 2.6)Gforce FX5600768Mb ram19" Eizo and 17" compaq monitors160, 80, 60 GB hard drivesNec DVD writer and LG CD writerWindows XP professionalCheersKieran

Kieran...thanks for your post...just to add more grist for the mill...my experience with the 60.72's was not so positive...I agree with you that in the immediate foreground things are very stable with little or no shimmering...however the shimmering in the distance was so bad I had to dump the 60.72's.I'm using a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 128 and an AMD Athalon 3000+ with 1024MB of Ram.Ted CreaghFlight Ontario

Sadly, you appear not to have heeded the advice in these forums about uninstalling previous generations of Nvidia drivers properly, when going from number set to number set - i.e. 4x.xx to 5x.xx or 5x.xx to 6x.xx.You have a corrupted installation and therefore all your comments are skewed. ALL files shuld be flagged 60.72. You had better re-download and install using the uninstall/file cleaner method if you want representative drivers.Allcott

Good advice Allcott, however ;-)I installed the 60.72 drivers via the 'update driver' on the adaptor tab and al my files are showing 6072, that's without doing a driver uninstall - I did make a restore point though although I noticed XP creates one automatically when updating drivers this way.Bottom line Kieran, something screwed up in your update :-)Someone did post something like a 50% increase in FPS, I certainly haven't seen that but I haven't had chance to fly with them yet, just slew mode.XP25001GB PC3200 RAMGF4 Ti4800SE

Vulcan, The 60.xx series drivers overrule a couple of old registry entries for the earlier cards. Anisotropic filtering doesn't seem to work properly and Profiles won't get picked up and used by applications on some systems unless you uninstall before putting in the new drivers. As a simple point of `housekeeping` it's a good idea to run the uninstall followed by a cleanup of vestiges of old drivers using Driver Cleaner or similar. The 60.72's are the initial release drivers for the new GF 6800 cards and are not expressly designed for earlier cards, although with the common architecture they are useable, and very useable on some systems! So a cautious, clean approach to the installation would appear to be sound judgement. Allcott
