May 30, 200422 yr OK... so as of now, we can run an AGP card and a PCI card on the same MOBO/PC.So when PCI Express gets going later this year or early next year, will we be able to run a PCI Express card and an AGP card together? The idea of using my 9500pro as a -second- video card is kind of exciting... let alone all of you who have 9800pro or higher cards.Talk about cranking up the frame rates on a dual monitor setup. I think this combo would make any of us happy.
May 30, 200422 yr Commercial Member Though I haven't read anything that specifically says you can't do this, I do believe PCI-X is supposed to replace AGP, not sit alongside it. Maybe a better solution than using PCI-X and AGP would be for mobo makers to just put two or more PCI-X x16 slots on the mobo, then you could run multiple vid cards... May 30, 200422 yr Yep, that's right AFAIK. It's either/or. Would have been nice though... Easily span views across performant adapters... Kind regards Jaap
May 30, 200422 yr HiI've read that some or most of the first PCI Express mobos will still have an AGP slot. It won't be able to take advantage of the PCI X speed but will let you run an AGP card. I'm not sure whether you can use a current PCI card with PCI X but kind of doubt it. I'm hoping we can use the AGP for a secondary vid card though, otherwise a lot of very expensive vid cards will become obsolete real fast.David
June 3, 200422 yr I don't expect the AGP to disappear for a long time either. Look at how many MOBOs still had an ISA slot long after PCI became standard. But if the PCI Express graphics cards (whenever they come out) are that much faster than AGP I'd like to use one and still use my 9800 Pro for another monitor or two. Of course for two PCI X cards in SLI mode I'd eat my 9800 Pro LOL.David
June 3, 200422 yr Here's a quick new news update. I was already wondering whether somebody would be able to come up with a solution to enable dual use of performant display adapters... The answer is 'ULi' apparently. 'ULi' is a fusion of ALi (Acer Labs) and UMC. At the current Computex they're showing a P4 north- (M1685) and southbridge chip (M1567) which would allow the combination we're dreaming of in this thread... Here's a link to a German homepage which has some info and pictures: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/47881Cheers everybody Jaap PS: You can probably find references in English by doing a search with your favorite engine.
June 3, 200422 yr but PCI E is useless unless video cards exceeds the bandwidth of AGP 8X. Which they currently don
