June 14, 200421 yr Hi friends, today i bought a new CPU (P4 3.20GB) for my MoBo (ASUS P4PE).I updated as per suggestion BIOS to latest version available at ASUS site (v.1007) and set CPU speed as auto/3200.Now the problem is that my PC doesn't boot anymore; and only can make it starts lowering speed to 2.3 GB...........tooooo BAD!!!Can anyone please suggest what should i do to squeeze all that LAZY-P4 power? Thanks in advanceLuigi ;-)
June 14, 200421 yr Luigi,First off, I would reinstall your old cpu, and old bios and make sure that the computer will boot from that.Second, is the new cpu the same FSB (front side buss), as the old?Meaning, you cannot take a 3.2 P4 800 FSB and make it work on a MB which is only slatted for perhaps a 533 or 400 FSB.You need to check that.Have you removed the cpu and checked that one of the pins is NOT bent over? I'v seen that happen. And, if you can get the cpu to boot, do it first with the old bios, and are you overclocking the old one and forgot to put it back to stock before changing cpu's?Hope this has been some help.Clay
June 14, 200421 yr Hi Luigi,The P4PE has a max front side bus speed of 533 MHz. I beleive the P4 3.2 requires a motherboard with 800 MHz FSB.JohnBoeing 727/737 & Lockheed C-130/L-100 Mechanichttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/ng_driver.jpg
June 15, 200421 yr That's true...as far as I know the fastest P4 that has a FSB of 533 MHz is a 2.8GHz CPU. In order to use your new CPU you need a mortherboard with a FSB on 800 MHz. I'm surprised that your local dealer did not tell you this.-Mikkel
June 15, 200421 yr Commercial Member Yeah, you need to get one of the newer motherboards, such as a P4P800 or P4C800 (If you want to stick with ASUS). You'll also need PC3200 memory if you don't already have it... Also make sure the heatsink you're putting on the CPU is rated for 3.2GHz... June 15, 200421 yr Also, do not forget to put on some thermal paste between the heatsink and onto the CPU itself (little metal square plate on the up side). Forgetting that, will also make the PC not boot - or shut down very fast when CPU gets too hot.
June 15, 200421 yr Luigi, you might have an older P4PE... The latest P4PE-X/TE support non-Prescott CPUs perfectly well... Any Northwood should fit a.m. mainboard. You will definitely not want an i865-XX ICH5 (without 'R') mainboard as Tabs suggested... If, only purchase the i875 with the ICH5-R... The 'R' is very important... The reason I got the P4PE-X/TE is, the 'Intel Application Accelerator' (IAA) is available. It's lovely and far cheaper than those Intel 'flagships.' Honestly, I found the i865PE a pain in the neck! Since, I 'downgraded' to a.m. mainboard and am perfectly happy. No 8xAGP, no 'dual-channel' etc. But it works 1000x better than the i865PE, due to the IAA... Good luck and kind regards Jaap BTW, this is the only ASUS board I would recommend at present. ASUS is taking a big break otherwise. Hardly any Bios updates anymore... What's goin on? Too much success? Or are they wanting to push uers towards Asrock? Who knows.
June 16, 200421 yr Thanks a lot my friends. In effect i had to also update (BUY!) a new MoBo (ASUS P4P800-SE, of course) and 2x512 DDR 400 - PC3200 modules; fortunately my reseller was smart enough to trade my old hardware so that the entire thing hasn't been too expensive. Now my PC runs at....http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/80343.jpgOne more question, forgive! Some time ago i noticed some hints regarding DUAL PROCESSOR, and now that i got one how should i set both CPU's for optimal FS9 usage?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/80344.jpgThanks againLuigi ;-)
June 16, 200421 yr Hi,I don't think there is anything to do to set the cpu's for optimal usage, unless you are using the RealityXP 530 GPS. If that is the case you should fire up FS9 and make sure it loads up with an aircraft that does not have the RXP 530 installed in it. Then ALT-TAB to your desktop and pull up the Task Manager. In the 'Applications' Tab right-click 'fs9.exe' and then go down and click on 'Set Affinity'. Uncheck 'CPU 1'. Leave 'CPU 0' checked of course. Now go back to FS9 and you're ready to load up your RXP 530 aircraft. As far as I know FS9 is Hyperthreading aware but does not actually take advantage of it. But since it is HT aware this allows you to solve the problem of running FS9 and the RXP 530 together on HT processors.Of course it's possible someone knows of some other optimization that I'm not aware of.Regards,Jim
June 18, 200421 yr Hi Jim.I'm not sure but, if i'm not wrong, there was a thread some time ago about FS9 increased performance related to a selective use of CPU's.Something like FS9 with CPU 0 and all other applications on the CPU 1.Do you remember?CheersLuigi ;-)
June 18, 200421 yr Hi Luigi,Well, what you're talking about is exactly what I mention in my previous post. I did have one thing wrong though, it's not the 'Applications' Tab, it's the 'Processes' Tab. Go ahead and try it out. But I don't think you'll see any difference unless your are using the RealityXP 530 GPS.What you do is set the affinity of FS2004 to one of the CPU's in the task manager. Start FS2004, and make sure you are starting it up with an aircraft that does not have the RealityXP 530 GPS installed to it. Then ALT-TAB to your desktop and right-click on the task bar. Select 'Task Manager'. It will come up with the 'Processes' Tab open. Find 'fs9.exe' and highlight it, then right-click on it. Select 'Set Affinity'. Leave 'CPU 0' checked but uncheck 'CPU 1'. Close out the task manager and you're done.Regards,Jim
June 19, 200421 yr OK Jim,all is cristal clear now.At the moment i'm an happy flightsimmer; give a look at the pic below.........http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/80756.jpgwhat you see is real time CPU speed display.I O/clocked my P4 3.20GB using that smart ASUS BIOS feature (5% - 10%....).Actually 10% runs quite stable. And CPU Temp. never exceed 45
June 19, 200421 yr Hi Luigi,I don't know that I helped much with my little CPU Affinity explanation, but you're welcome! :-) I'm glad to see that you're a happy camper... err, flightsimmer I mean. Enjoy that new system!Cheers, :DJim
