ATI - Way to Regain Anti-aliasing (Anyone Tried This Yet?)

>P.S. What are your sys specs (basic)?I run a P4 3.0 with an ATI Radeon Pro 128 All In Wonder. My monitor is unusual. I use an Apple 20" Cinema Display at 1680x1050x32. I would ordinarily think that's the problem but as I noted, fs9 launches fine with a default fs9.cfg file.If by "driver call" you mean the video card reference in the cfg, this was indeed different in the default cfg from the one I can't get to work. The default references the Omega driver in parenthesis after describing the video card. My old cfg didn't pick up this Omega reference. However, when I copy the reference from the default cfg to the one I usually use, I still get a black screen. From past experience, I think that my cfg may have gotten corrupted by the driver change. I've altered all the settings that I think should fix the problem and nothing works. So now I'm taking the default cfg - which works - and adding to it my custom settings a few at a time. My guess is that I won't find a setting that is a problem and that I've just got to rebuild the cfg from scratch. This is a painstaking process. I hope I see some AA improvement when it's all over with and will keep you posted.

_____________________________________________________________"You can set the AA and AF in the Omega CP. He leaves it at Application Preference so folks with slower system can tweak to their choice. I have a 9800 XT and run AA at 4X and AF at 16X, Performance mode (I don't see any difference between Performance and Quality modes with regard to IQ)."_____________________________________________________________I agree. I cannot see any difference running performance AF or quality AF. I can, however; see the difference between 4xAF, 8xAF and 16xAF. I run 4xAA & 16xAF (performance mode). I see a huge difference in IQ changing the ingame trilinear/bilinear/no filtering slider. I run trilinear. By far the best IQ. I believe this slider overrides the ATI control panel AF (Quality/Performance) setting. It just seems to run better with AF on Performance and that ingame slider set on trilinear. Also, I use the Omega drivers for two reasons. They work great with good performance and excellent IQ. And secondly; cause even I can't screw up the driver install. No matter what. They always seem to work as advertised after a new driver install. When I used Nvidia cards, I always had to call tech support after I hosed a driver change. *:-*

Glad you're getting it sorted, Macwino. Undoubtedly the old driver call conflicted with the new call for the Omega's. I've not seen that before, but keep it mind in the future.Greg

"And secondly; cause even I can't screw up the driver install. No matter what. They always seem to work as advertised after a new driver install."That's what makes the Omega's perfect for me... they're dummy-proof. :-) Greg

>Let us know what happens with your AA now with the Omega's.Greg, the Omega's make a difference. I no longer lose the AA. It was worth the effort - and thanks for your assistance. I'm a convert.Macwino

Hello Again,This is mostly aimed at Greg. ;)I installed the Omega's. There was one thing I wasn't sure about. I installed some Omega drivers a very long time ago. Back then you had to already have ATI's driver installed before installing Omega's. I was wondering with these whether or not the ATI Cat 4.6 driver needed to be already installed prior to installing the Omega 2.5.51's. I don't believe I saw anything mentioned about this one way or the other. Anyway, I had the Catalyst 4.6 standalone driver(no Control Panel) installed prior to installing the the Omega 2.5.51's. I have a feeling that it is not necessary to have the ATI Cat's installed before installing the Omega's nowadays. Just wondering I suppose.Anyway, it seems it's all good now. I can't make the AA go away! :-lolCheers,Jim

Nope, Jim, The Omega's install just fine with or without ATI drivers already installed. The Omega's are a stand alone package and include some nice perks, like Radlinker.Glad to see you've resolved the problem.Greg

>The Omega's are a stand alone package and include some nice perks, like Radlinker.Greg, any suggestions on the settings for implementing Radlinker with a Radeon 9800 All in Wonder 128 Pro? I've been afraid to mess with it without some guidance, and I can't seem to find any in my searches. I'm a novice as I've never overclocked anything before. The default settings for the card are Core 378 and Memory 337.5.Also, if anyone knows of a good tutorial on how to approach overclocking with Radlinker I'd really love to learn about it.Thanks.Macwino

"...any suggestions on the settings for implementing Radlinker with a Radeon 9800 All in Wonder 128 Pro?"Hope you've got some time... this won't be quick. :-) If you wish to overclock your card you must first upgarde the cooling. The stock coolers most manufacturers put on their GPU's are barely adequate. A good choice for aftermarket cooling is the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc....-186-110&depa=0 . It's not well suited for extreme O/C, but it certainly does a much better job than any stock cooler.I actually have a 9800 Pro that has an R360 core. Many manufacturers have installed R360 (XT) cores on their Pro cards since the first of the year, especially the past three months. In fact, it's difficult today to find a 9800 Pro that doesn't have and R360 core. This is great for the consumer in two ways... the card can be flashed to an XT/128MB BIOS (there are more and more of them showing up every day) thereby increasing the default speeds to 412/365, and once BIOS flashed the D3D performance of the card is enhanced by enabling pixel shaders that aren't present in the R350 core. The latter is good for games like FS. The performance increase isn't great (maybe 3-6%) but it's free, so why not? Before doing any kind of a flash you must first know what kind of core and memory your card has. The only correct way to know the core is to pull the stock cooler (warranty goes away) and look at the top of the core. The memory brand will be noted on the modules... usually it is Samsung or Hynix. More info on flashing an R360 Pro card to XT here: http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=1 .You'll need some tools before beginning. In the Omega package is ATI Tool. It's a nice place to start. ATI Tool will find the max core and memory speeds... in it's world! It is a pretty handy tool, but not always correct. You can start your overclocking expereince with it. One note of caution... don't allow ATI Tool to run untended! It could damage your card! Babysit the thing while it's finding the max core and memory speeds. And then take them with a grain of salt!A better tool is 3DMark03 http://www.futuremark.com/download/?3dmark03.shtml . Once you think you're close with ATI Tool, then run 3DMark03. Specifiaclly, you're looking for two things: In the Nature Scene look closely at the water. If you see any white dots in the water, then your core speed is too high. Also, look for the same white spots in the Pixel Shader test. If you see any white dots in the rhino, then the core is too high. If in any of the tests you see random flashing dark spots (often triangular shaped), then you're memory speed is too high. Adjust accordingly until you run clean (artifact free) benchmarks.Obviously, this excercise isn't for the faint of heart... or those who wish not to void their warranty by removing the stock cooler. And, of course, I ain't responsible if you FUBAR your card!Having said that, I flashed my Pro to XT 2 1/2 months ago and it has done just great. I use the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer (modded to accept a 25CFM 70mm fan) and my card runs 24/7 at 432/398. This card has offered me great bang for the buck ($200.00 at Fry's).Hope this helps,Greg

Wow, Greg, that's indeed a lot to digest. No time to delve into it right now, however, as I've got to go out. But I'll review it in depth when I get back this evening and decide whether I want to embark on this course. A part of me says it's better to spend the time flying, but we'll see.Thanks.Macwino
