October 1, 200421 yr Depends on which one is the fastest. But me I have a WD RAPTOR SATA and an older IDE 7200 RPM WD harddrive.Me I have windows XP and FS 9 and all other applications on the faster RAPTOR. Much because of the convenience to ghost it and have a new fresh system running within 15 minutes when it get
October 1, 200421 yr Excellent tips, thanks! This might be stupid, but how do you change the path of the trashbin and temp. internet files? Thanks!
October 2, 200421 yr Well if you use internet explorer you just choose Internet options or whatever language you have don
October 2, 200421 yr Jeff,I agree with oqvist (he seems like a knowledgeable PC user -or tech perhaps?-based on his previous answers to other postings I had made). The faster drive should contain the FS9 and Windows installations. I have a 7200rpm SATA drive by Western Digital (160GB) and a 40GB ATA133 7200rpm EIDE drive by Maxtor. I have not re-organized my installations as mentioned above but I am moving some of the large scenery mesh from FSGENESIS to the faster serial ATA drive to improve free space on the ATA133. The less files on a drive or partition, the less searching is required and also, with free space of less than 10-15%, windows WILL slow down considerably. The page file (or swap file for windows 9X machines) should always be on a physically separate drive than where windows is installed to improve performance. Ideally, I have heard some people also do a DEDICATED Flight Simulator 2004 partition or drive where only Windows, basic tools like anti-virus, firewall, ad/spam cleaner (like Ad-Aware) are installed and NOTHING else (i.e. no other programs) other than FS2004. You can then have a second copy of Windows (XP for example) installed and have a multi-boot system with two copies of XP running. I don't have this but do have Windows 2000 running some other apps. If you are unsure about how to make a multi-boot system, then don't try for you'll need considerably practice and familiarity before attempting such a system. Ideally, though, partition your drive(s) to include DATA (e.g. FS add-ons like scenery and aircraft from freeware and payware makers) and PROGRAMS on separate partitions as I do. It is good in organizing your PC when you split programs and data into separate partitions so that, if any problems arise with your windows XP, for example, you can just re-format (at worst case scenario, not to be done for every problem of course) and re-install XP on that partition without even worrying about backing up your data or moving it etc...I have the following setup on my PC (may change in the future):DRIVE 0 - Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm ATA-133 EIDE C: Windows 2000 Pro E: Windows XP Pro F: Windows 2000 ServerDRIVE 1 - Western Digital 7200rpm 160GB drive SERIAL ATA D: DATA only (FS addons) AND PAGEFILE for Windows XP P: PROGRAMS - e.g. games like soccer etc... AND PAGEFILE for Windows 2000(P.S.: You can change the drive letter if you wish using Administrative tools-computer management-disk management)Hope this helps.John I love flying my "iddy biddy Jumbo" CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, socket 775/3GHz/1333MHz bus/6MB cache MOBO: Asus P5E3 Deluxe WiFi-AP@n/Intel X38 chipset RAM: 4GB Kingston HyperX 1333MHz. rated 7-7-7-20, matched pair (2 x 2GB) GRAPHICS: Sapphire Radeon 5770HD 1GB (w/ fan) MONITOR: Samsung 24", 2494HM LCD wide-screen 1920x1080 SOUND: SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS HARD DRIVES: 1xWestern Digital WD1600JD SATA 160GB (primary/Windows XP and system boot drive) 1xWestern Digital WD3200AAJS SATA2 320GB (secondary/Flight Simulator 2004 running off WinXP Pro 32-bit, games video editing drive) 1xWestern Digital 500GB Black series SATA2 (Windows 7 64-bit: FSX is running off Win7; Windows XP Professional 32-bit) CASE: Antec Sonata III 500W OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit for FSX; Windows XP Pro 32-bit for other things.
