PCI Graphics Card

Featured Replies

Hi all,I need to upgrade my card but I am pretty limited in my choice. My MOBO only has PCI slots which are not able to take PCIE cards. Can anyone recommend a PCI graphics card?I have heard that Dell MOBO's are pretty much un-upgradable due to different power supplies and power connectors from mainline manufactures. Has anyone tried upgrading theirs?

You don't indicate what graphics card you are using or if your computer has on-board graphics. If you have empty PCI slots, then you should have no problem finding (albeit limited choices) a graphics card that should work. The problem is if you only have PCI slots, then your computer is only going to see limited benefit from a new graphics card due to CPU capability. Is it worth the money investing in a new graphics card for this computer!!??W. W. Sieffert,I am currently using a GeForce 2 32MB on a P4 3GHZ computer with a 1 GB of PC2700 RAM. The graphics card was carried over from my old computer. The fastest PCI card I can find it a FX5200, would that be my only choice?

You got a 3GHZ P4 and no AGP slot? I find that very hard to believe.

Probably!Do check to see if you have an AGP slot, however. If your computer was purchased as an inexpensive unit, it is possible it doesn't have an AGP slot. Some computer have an AGP slot but it is unusable due to the controller chip installed. In this case, the AGP slot usually has a plug in it.W. Sieffert

>You got a 3GHZ P4 and no AGP slot? I find that very hard to>believe. You may find it hard to believe but it's true. A Dell Dimension 2400 with an Intel 82845GV (Brookdale) motherboard does not have any AGP slots, only three PCI.

>You got a 3GHZ P4 and no AGP slot? I find that very hard to>believe.this is quite a common practice, your average non-computer savy punter is constantly bombarded by adverts for "intel inside" pentium proccessors, he probably has no intention of playing games and is goin gto use it for the net, he gets his AOL disc and goes to PC world where they tell him he NEEDS a 3GHz P4 for surfing the net, all he knows is that a higher number is better. also chances are his kids have an X-Box so the PC will not be used and the CPU will never be used to even half its potential, but the main thing is the shop has shifted another unit.Another thing the shop assistant also probably does not know about what s/he is selling either; a little while ago when Sims 2 came out my son found his old PC unable to run the game (1 gig, TNT2), so the PC was passed onto his sister so she could do here internet banking and shoppin (more than up to the job), i then went to the local PC World (did not fancy buy all the bits and building another one), to get a PC capable of running the Sims 2 without me having to worry about anything. I was Just about to walk out the shop with a 2.8 gig P4 E-Machine, when the assistant who was serving me mentioned to another meber of staff what i wanted the machine for, he informed us that this brand new machine would not run the most popular PC game around!!!!!!!!This is how/why the manufacturers of name brand PCs can afford to sell these unmached systems, all i can think of as a comparison is it would be akin to selling Smart cars fitted with 7 litre V8s.
