January 18, 200521 yr I've recently had to have a new ASUS Mobo fitted to my PC. My existing Graphic Card, a Nvidia GeForce Ti4200, was fitted to the new mobo. Yesterday I noticed that the BIOS AGP Aperture was set at 64Mb; whereas in the old mobo the BIOS setting was 128Mb. My question is, which is the correct setting?Ken
January 18, 200521 yr Hi Ken,This has always been more than a little confusing. Some time ago the amount of onboard memmory to be "shared" by the video card was important. Not so today with video cards using 128, 256, or even 512 MB of VRam. But what is important about the AGP Aperture is the implementation of the GART Table. Sadly, info from video card manufacturers is terribly lacking on this issue.More info on this subject here. In the end you can try different settings for the AGP Aperature till you find one that performs best for you. Don't worry about testing different settings... you won't break anything. Just don't set it to 16MB or lower, lest you completely disable your video card's hardware acceleration.Hope this helps,Greg
January 18, 200521 yr Hello Greg,Thanks for your reply. I now know more than I did, it doesn't appear to be an 'exact science' then? I have been unable to connect via your link up to now, I'll try again later. I'm awaiting the arrival of a new graphic card it's Gigabyte Radeon 9600XT 256Mb AGP; it's the VIVO feature I'm after.Ken
January 18, 200521 yr Had the same problem using that link Ken, try theis onehttp://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=1
January 18, 200521 yr Hi there Vulcan,Thank you for your reply. This is not the first time you have helped me; last time was about Approach Charts and suchlike.Your link did the trick, I found the article straight to the point and answered my query completely. My thanks to you both gentlemen.KenSomerset, England
January 18, 200521 yr Argh!! Sorry about the dead link, Ken.Agree with you about it being and inexact science. Even the VC manufacturers seem to skirt the subject whenever possible.Lot's of folks will tell you to set the size to 1/2 the physical RAM on board while others will tell you to set it to "X" size and be done with it. But in the end each user should test with their system and settle on a size that works best.GregP.S. Now I'm off to practice somemore with those HTML tags. :-)
January 18, 200521 yr Way I see it is; Google is like Avsim, they have become part of the 'family', you see 'em several times a day and soon you take them for granted; but you would be lost without them. But good people such as Greg and yourself pop up and help fellow flight simmers with their problems and questions, they don't really need to do that, so it's right to thank them for taking the time to help.I'll put Google on my Christmas card list anyway :)Thanks again.Ken
