VGA vs. DVI

Featured Replies

Hi all-On the back of my Dell 8300 w/ATI9800 are two adapter ports: one VGA (blue) and one DVI (white). Here's my question before I start switching things around. I have two monitors (both LCDs): one main (for FS9) and a smaller one for FSNav. The smaller one has a VGA port only so I connected it to the VGA port on the back of the box. The larger main monitor has both DVI and VGA connections so I connected the main monitor to the DVI port on the back of the box.On the smaller monitor, designated as secondary, when going into settings, I have a variety of resolutions available. Not so on my DVI (main) monitor. Its fixed resolution is 1280 by 1024. Also, when you go into monitor adjustments, contrast is also fixed at 50%. Hmmm........Are both these ports being controlled by the adapter, or is the VGA the 'main' port with the DVI being a 'secondary' port? If so, is the DVI port taking full advantage of the card or partial? Hope I'm making sense here.I was thinking about switching connections, that is, hook my main monitor up to the blue VGA port and hooking my secondary up to the DVI (with an adapter that Dell supplies with this unit). Before doing so, I thought I'd try here first. Thanks for any advice/explanation.Mark

It's strange that you can't change the res but I wouldn't worry about it - LCDs are fixed at a particular resolution anyway and changing that creates an extremely blurry and ugly image.DVI offers superior quality to VGA and should be used for your main monitor.

Hi Jimmi-I can change the resolution down but not up. Thanks for the rest of the info. I think I'll leave well enough alone.

I just purchased the Dell 2005FPW 20.1" LCD monitor. It's working great (so far) (display is set at 1680 by 1050). Works great with FS9 and much better in FPS than my old 21" CRT. I had the same question you had in regards to using the VGA or DVI adaptor as both came with my LCD panel. I tried both and heard (through the Dell forum and by searching on the Internet "DVI-I" was search term) that DVI was best so using the digital connection. According to the Dell manual you cannot adjust contrast and many other display settings w/a DVI connection. However, in your display settings for your video card, under the Color Management tab, make sure you have a color profile set for your monitor. Dell furnished a digital color profile for my monitor but I found the display was still too bright so I loaded an old Adobe profile and calibrated my display via the Adobe Gamma control (got this free with Photoshop 6 or CS). You can get software to calibrate your monitor on the Internet (search term in Google is "calibrate your monitor"). Some are free, some are shareware but it will help you get the optimun resolution for your monitor. Hope this helps.Jim
