Moving XP Swap Drive to Another Physical Drive

Featured Replies

I am installing a second ( D: ) Hard Drive on my computer, I was wondering if moving the swap file to a seperate physical drive, would I increase my performance? FPS?Thanks!Barry

My Friend, This needs to be posted in the Hardware forum..I dont think Im a moderator, But tom has said that if this contiunes, He will close the Forum, so please dont spoil it for the rest of us.In Relation to your question, Yes it will help, maybe not with FPS, but stutters and pauses should stop or at least not be as bad.Jason

I did post it there last night and NO REPLIES.I believe this is the issue that was debated as Tom was raising the posting issue.Barry

Just an update, I did get a reply. So I will post here in the future!Sorry and Thanks!Barry

It will help Barry. Just how much is debatable but the load times for textures should be a tad better. Besides, there is no good reason not to move it. You may also want to set the swap at a fixed length to eliminate fragmentation. That will help some also.Doug

Will it give me better overall FPS increase? It seems like texture load will be helped, but my hard drive isn't very active once everything is loaded. What if the D: drive becomes unaccessable? Will it revert and create a swap file automatically on C:?I guess it doesn't hurt to give it a try. Thanks!Barry

OK I wasn't able to move it. I was able to create an additional Swap Drive on D:... (actually F:), but it left the C: swap drive there and I didn't see away to remove it.Do I just reduce the size of the swap drive on the C:? Or can somebody tell me what I need to do to get rid of the primary one. Thanks!Barry

Don't do any of that. Leave the Paging File (it's not a swap file, that's different) on C:Instead, use the second drive to hold some of the aftermarket scenery - you can easily move the locations around by simply changing the scenery .cfg aliases. Having two lots of FS `stuff` loading in parallel will do you more good than messing with system files.I have posted on this before, in this forum. Search on my name or `addon scenery`Allcott
