March 14, 200521 yr Hi,Is anyone using the new Audigy4 card?I have the original audigy1 and was wondering if there is any reason to upgrade? Creative have released several generations since the original. My only interests are with music playback and flight simulator. Is it likely to improve game performance over what I already have?My system is P4 2.8 (533), 1 gb 333ddr ram, ATI All in Wonder 9700pro, intel 865PERL motherboard, soundblaster audigy pro card supplying signal to, get this... a Marantz PM17 KI signiture amplifier and dynaudio 50 speakers... reason for this is I used to listen to a lot of music via the cd player but now with mp3's and all...most of my music is PC based... so I decided to move my hifi equipment to my PC!!!!Thanks...Paul (SPIM)
March 14, 200521 yr http://www.guru3d.com/article/sound/182/The best thing about it is that the Audigy 2's will now come down in price. Nuff said.Greg
March 14, 200521 yr http://www.guru3d.com/article/sound/182/8/Actually the Audigy4 performs (ever so slightly) worse. The Audigy2 is a good card. I doubt you'd be able to actually *hear* any difference with the Audigy4 (whatever happened to the Audigy3?) unless you have very expensive speakers or headphones. Consumer audio cards have really improved since ~ the SBLive era where they sounded like crap with muffled bass and/or high-end.Only drawback for me with the Audigy2 (other than it being a *huge* card that barely fits in my SFF), and this is only because I do a bit of music work with mine, is the lack of >48KHz ASIO support (v2.0) but it's no big deal. Certainly not for the average user. Other than that like the card. Don't care much for this whole EAX and 15.1 (or whatever they are up to nowadays) thing, which is probably what this card improves upon the most. Stereo is fine with me and I don't need my games and music to sound as if I'm sitting in a huge cathedral listening to them. -
March 14, 200521 yr Author Thanks Guys,As I have an Audigy1 I am wondering if there is any point in upgrading? The review link above stated that it wasn't worth upgrading if you own any of the audigy series, so I guess that answers the question.I can see improvments for musicians with ASIO2 support, but what I don't really understand is.. all the marketing seems to be aiming the product at the gamer, offering improved sound and performance...Oh well, I guess it's $300 saved for now.Paul
March 14, 200521 yr For those who are more audiophile than gamer, the M-Audio series is a very good choice. Here are some owners' opinions (both M-Audio and Creative). The Audigy cards serve the gamer well, though I too would question spending the money to upgrade from a series 2 card to a series 4. Not enough bang for the buck for my wallet.GregEdit: Hmmm, the link worked while I was typing the post. No doubt has something to do with Newegg's security. At any rate, one can go to the M-Audio products section at Newegg.com and read submissions by both M-Audio and Creative owners.
