x64 FS9 runs too fast!

Featured Replies

For all those who use x64 XP; is anyone having a rather unusual and annoying problem where FS9 runs TOO fast even though frame rates are the same as x32 XP?I know it sounds weird, and it's kinda difficult to explain, but it appears that x64 XP causes FS9 to run as if it is in X4 or X8 speed even thought it is in normal speed mode. I just can't figure it out, occasionally it runs normally but more often than not it's simply too fast. Attempting to run it in x0.5 speed doesn't compensate properly for the difference either. It must be something to do with emulating x32 applications ... anybody got any advice or feedback?Del

Actually - I may have just found the reason why. I came across this thread:>------------>If your game seems to be running at double speed on x64, you can try adding this to your boot.ini /USEPMTIMER It has to do with processor throttling technologies causing the QueryPerformanceFrequency API to return values that cause the game to run too fast (such as returning that the processor is running at 700mhz instead of 2Ghz .XP includes a handy tool to edit your boot.ini called bootcfg and I recommend that you use it.example:bootcfg /copy /id 1bootcfg /raw "/USEPMTIMER /noexecute=optin /fastdetect" /id 2>-------------Now, I have an AMD64 3400+ which uses a technology called 'Cool and Quiet' designed to slow the CPU down from 2.2GHz to 800MHz when juice is not needed to prolong the life of the CPU etc. The setting can be found in BIOS Setup. I can only imagine this is where the problem is. I'll try this tonight and update the forum tomorrow.Fingers crossed.Del.

Now for the update as promised. There's good news and bad news.I was right about the "Cool and Quiet" function with AMD64 chips and it's affect on FS9 in x64 XP. When I turned it off in the BIOS , FS9 runs normally in x64 XP. Great. But, there's a BUT!There was an performance impact. Firstly, the performance of FS9 in x64 XP was poor, poorer than x32 Windows which suprised me completely. Even stutters were much worse. And then to my amazement when I ran FS9 in x32 Windows I noticed that it also took a hit. Switching "Cool and Quiet" back on results in an improvement in x32, but renders x64 more or less useless.Still, I've made progress. I'm sure there are more tweaks and settings to x64 which will improve FS9 in x64. But it doesn't seem logical that Cool and Quiet set OFF would have a negative impact. In fact, I would have throught that it would be the other way around.Any feedback welcome. My quest continues...Del.

Truly odd, I have x64 XP with AMD Cool & Quiet disabled, FS runs great, no super fast mode and the frames are just as good as 32 bit windows. One thing I did though was disable DEP all together by editing the boot.ini file, I don't know if this would have something to do with it or not.

Kurt,Thanks for the feedback. Excuse my ignorance, but what is DEP?Del.Dublin & Edinburgh

Data Execution Prevention. Right click on my computer, Advanced, Settings.Cant say I had any problem with speed when I had it running on the x64 beta - it just ran more smoothly. I did have a problem with CPU throttling affecting fs on x32 when I first built the machine so I disabled cool n quiet in the bios.

Well I'm no further forward really. Have turned off DEP for FS9, still performance is woefully poor on x64, at least 10FPS less than x32 bit.Cool and Quiet seems to have a big impact on FS9. I'm wondering is there a way that I can leave it on in x64, but up the juice on the CPU some other way so that FS9 "realises" that it's running at 2.2GHz and not the throttled back 800MHz.Are there any other obvious tweaks for x64 I'm missing? I have all the latest drivers, it's clean install, etc. etc.Del.____________________________________________AMD64 3400+ATi Radeon 9800SE 256MB (softmod to 9800 PRO)1Gb DDR333 Kingston RAM 200Gb Seagate Barracuda SATA 7200 HDD(x32 XP SP2 Home)40GB Hitachi SATA 7200 HDD (x64 XP Pro)MSI-6741 K8TM-ILSR moboSony DVD-ROMLG DVD-RW"How wide the limits stand, between a splendid and a happy land"http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg[/img]
