To select a new monitor a really difficult choice

Featured Replies

I have a more than 6 years old 17" CRT which I find more and more inadequate for FS and also other stuff. When I look a for a new screen the choice is very difficult but I have found two 19" TFT which seem most interesting, they are1) LG L1950H2) Samsung 913bDoes anybode here have any of these or have seen them in real life?I don't have any opportunite to see them or anyone else for real. Actually the salesmen I have spoken with has not seen them either. This is one of the reason for the choice being so difficult? In a review of the Samsung 913n (the same as 913b but without DVI)they wrote that the light intensity is uneven because of the low responsetime of 8 mS. Bright in the upper part and dark in the lower parts. This is significantly irritating. What do you say about that? Also regarding the LG L1950H they wrote that a disadvantage is the limited viewing angle. But that is stated as 160 degrees which is the stated value of most TFT I have examined. That was the two best TFT I have found. Do you have any other suggestions for3)which is better than these?

Hello there,This might not be relevant to you (well, I hope it is in some way!), but, having grown tired of the huge beige CRT eyesore I had, I recently bought a 17-inch Hyundai L72S LCD (apparently they make LCDs for some other Korean companies). The response time is 8ms, contrast ratio is 700:1. It is VERY bright, and evenly so; it also looks quite good on a desk! I've been using it for FS a lot, and I can't notice any ghosting or other noticeable issues. I am extremely satisfied so far, so you might consider this brand. You don't really "pay for the name" as we say in French (maybe you say that in English as well!) so it was cheaper (like USD 75 cheaper) than similar LCDs with 25ms response times and lower constrast ratios.I hope this helps you out a bit...Nicolas in CYOW

What could be of interest is to know what kind of CRT did you use before this TFT? Also you suggest a 17" TFT and really after thinking about this I tend to think that the cost is a bit to highfor the two screens I listed.Do you think 17" TFT is enough?Would you say that this 17" TFT is defenitely a better choice than a 19" CRT? I can get a very good 19" CRT for almost half the price of a Samsung 913b.

Hello again,I used a Proview 17 inch CRT, truly plain vanilla. Naturally CRTs are less expensive, and I've been told the image quality on a CRT will always be superior to that of a LCD, but the LCD I have is wholly satisfactory. I also went LCD because it is nicer looking, even when it's not on. As for the size, I personally wouldn't go 19" - that's almost like sitting a foot away from a 20" TV (and I usually don't do that!). It's a personal matter, really...Nicolas in CYOW
