Upgrade from AMD 1700+ to 2100+?

Featured Replies

Ok, stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway.I've got a:Soltek 75DRV4 P1 Mainboard Socket AAMD 1700+Gainward GeForce 3 128MB512 MB memorythe fastest chip it will accept is 2100+It currently has Win98 OSI'm thinking of upgrading it. Athlon 2100+ ~$65512 MB PC2100 ~$35 or lessXP SP2(?)Is it worth it? Will I get a noticeable performance improvement?I also have access to a GeForce 5200 128 MB graphics, would that be a noticeable upgrade?I am currently very happy running FS on a Dell D800 laptop with a 1.7GHz PentiumM, 1GB mem, nVidia 4200Go 64MB graphics. Will I get comparable performance? I'm looking to be running FS on multiple machines, I'm not looking for a replacement for my current setup, just another machine with roughly comparable performance or better. Thanks,Thomas

>Soltek 75DRV4 P1 Mainboard Socket A>AMD 1700+>the fastest chip it will accept is 2100+>I had a Soltek 75DRV5 and after updating the BIOS it could handleat least 2400+. I did upgrade from 1800+ to 2400+. I noticed very little difference in performence.>512 MB PC2100 ~$35 or lessI also upgraded from 512M to 1 Gb and here I noticed a significant improve in performence not in fps but in less stutter.>XP SP2(?)>I have XP SP2 and I think it's a good idea to get. Many addons won't work with Win 98.>I also have access to a GeForce 5200 128 MB graphics, would>that be a noticeable upgrade?>I upgraded from Geforce 4 MX 440 to Radeon 9800 Pro 128M and this resulted in a significant improvement in performence. But I think the most noticable improvement was uppgrading from Athlon XP 2400+ to Athlon 64 3200+.

Yeah, I got this MB in 2001, it is only only capable of 2100+. Later revisions of the same board could go higher, but not this one.Thomas
