August 6, 200520 yr Great joy then great gloom. Fired up new PC with FS2004 (what else would I need it for?) and got fantastic frame rates but then after 5-10 minutes the system crashed with the "ati2dvag driver has stopped working normally" message, requiring a reboot. Happens every time. For what it's worth, I can run the 3dmark2001/2003/2005 suites ok.System description: AMD64 3700+ SanDiego CPU in ABit AX8 motherboard, 2GB (4x512MB) DDR400 RAM, SATA hard drives, Creative Audigy ZS sound card, ATI PCI-E X800XT video card, 495W Enermax PSU. Windows XP SP2 new install.FS2004 patched to v9.1, no other add-ons installed. No joystick installed.Latest motherboard BIOS and VIA drivers.Catalyst 3.7 video driversAnyone have any suggestions on what I can try next? Thanks.--Bryn
August 6, 200520 yr I do not own an ATI card but I do know that the 3.7 drivers are old, I do not believe they would support the x800 card. That may be why they FS is crashing, try the latest drivers and see if that makes a difference.
August 8, 200520 yr http://www.omegadrivers.netBryn......have you tried the omegadrivers? They are pretty good,I am using version 5.6 omegas on my 800XL,no problems.Sometimes the ATI drivers work, sometimes they don't work for FS9....give 'em a try.Stan

I have since found that another 3d application I loaded also triggers the driver failure message, so it is something wrong with my system.Any more ideas from the hardware experts?--Bryn
August 9, 200520 yr Hi Bryn,The problem with the error message you are receiving is that it points to the video card, but that doesn't always mean the VC is the culprit. Two things I would check are: VC cooling and chipset drivers. Though the PCI-e systems don't use a GART table (therby eliminating one possible source of problems on many systems) it would still be a good idea to clean your system of the old chipset drivers and install the latest version.VC cooling is as much a matter of system cooling as it is the fan on the VC. If for some reason your case isn't getting cool, fresh air to the VC region all it's fan has to work with is stagnant, hot air. The easiest way to rule out a VC heating issue is the old remove-the-left-side-panel-and-stick-a-small-house-fan-in-the-open-side routine. Do this test and then go fly.Good luck,Greg
August 17, 200520 yr Normally overheating is a screen freezCrash to desktops or spontaneous re-boots can often be donw to a faultly memory module, a badly seating one, or a power supply with insufficient power. For a high end card you may need a PSU with 450 watts to be sure it's running okCrash to desktop probably memorySpontaneous re-boot either memroy or PSUScreen lock up; freeeezzzze overheatingIt could just be a faulty video cardUnlikely I think to be chip set drivers but worth checkingPeter
August 17, 200520 yr Bryn,I have the same card. I sometimes get the same error message especially after upgrading to a new driver. I have fixed my problem by manually reinstalling the ATI drivers. Go into your Device Manager, select your display adaptor, click on update drivers, and then select no when the wizard asks whether you want to automatically scan your system for updated drivers. When you get to the screen to manually find your updated drivers, goto C:/ATI/Support/5-7 folder/driver/2KXP_INF/CX_25203.INF. Select okay and the drivers will be reinstalled. By the way, the new 5.8 drivers are out at ATI.com. Hope this helps.Jim
