Nvidia 7800 GTX : first impressions !!!

Featured Replies

Hello,Just wanted to share my amazement about the nvidia 7800.System :P4 3,4Ghz, 1Gb Ram, 80Gb HD, Nvidia 7800 GTX 256 PCI-eTwo Dell 21" crt monitors.Since yesterday and thanks to this wonderful card I get around 70-100 fps in flight, 20-30 on ground, with a resolution of 3200*1600@85 mhz.Evry single slider in FS9 is maxed out (except 3D cloud - don't like those).Pretty cool ..Cheers

How does that compare to what you had before? What settings do you have your card set at? Tony=http://www.flightsim-bevs.com]BEVBetaSig.jpg

Hi Tony,Before I had an ATI X300/X500. Frames were about 9-10 on ground and 20-25 in air ON ONE monitor only(since you cannot tell the ATI card to stretch the desktop to two) - at least I couldn't figure out how.So this was on 1600*1200@85 Mhz. I undocked the panels to the second screen but the refresh rate dropped. I agree, the x300/x500 isn't really the card you should use to do FS.The 7800 GTX has NO pareticular settings (I did not touch anything about the default settings). The performance is just amazing ...believe me.Torsten

Torsten, If you had the clouds on 3D what would the FPS be. I'm looking at this card aswellP4 3.2 HT1MD DDR ram200 HDIntell MBDVD burneron board sound and VCThanks Scot.19 FPS until d clouds then to 6-8

neville1983 I'm going to be building a new system soon using that card and had a ? on how your using your two monitors. Is your VC spanning across both monitors? How do you do that? If so, I'm amazed your still getting such high fps. If you could post a compressed screenie, that'd be great!!I was thinking of getting one of the dell widescreen flatpanels...but my just opt to get two Samsung 204Ts if I can stretch the VC across the two and maintain decent FPS. Planning on running that with an AMD FX-57 btw. Thanks in advance.Allen

Hello Scot, hello Allen,Id did some flight testing. You can find the attached files below.3D cloud can bring this card to 15-25 fps, ever lower in like really big, detailed airports such as simflyers KLAX (5-10). But still remember, this baby is working on 3200*1600*32@85hz .... !!! Another fps cruncher I found out is the "Display shadows on ground" option in the display panel.Another side effect : aircraft handeling on ground is extremly smooth. For configuring the strech mode :Select your 2nd monitor, UNCHECK the "expand dektop to this monitor" box. Reboot.Return to graphics panel and pull your resolution glider on the first screen till maximum possible resolution (even windows will work faster :)) )!!In the nvidia option panel chose "Expand horizontaly". There you go!Back in FS you now have a window of the same size.By the way : FS is more performant in windowed mode (see screenshots).I noticed that when you hit Alt+Enter to switch to full screen mode, frame rate drops. Windowed mode is more fun, because you can undock the panels, resize them and put them where you want :))Go get that card !!!!Torstenhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126070.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126071.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126072.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126073.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126074.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126075.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126076.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126077.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126078.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/126079.jpgPS . Sory for the JPG file quality but the original file size is around 4MB :))

Neville - what's that cool little window "FSSKYVISION" ?Keith

:))Glad you ask. It's a inflight entertainment program I am working on.Allows you to watch DVD, listen to 12 music channels, Internet surfing and Airshow flight information. It is still under developpement.Btw, if there is some one here how could give me a helping hand on some dev subjects I would really appreciate it.Cheers

Looks like a pretty nifty addition to those boring long haul flights. Will you be releasing it as payware or freeware?Regards,Alex
