October 6, 200520 yr i've just got a new laptop, but i am having trouble trying to connect in the the internet. I have a BT 2MB broadband connection that works fine on my desktop, but when i try connecting the network cable, it doesn't want to play. As far as i can see, all the settings are correct/the same, the notification display says there is a connection, but internet explorer doesn't find anything, defaulting to the have you got the right settings/address page. What am i doing wrong? Also BTW, I have it on automatically detect settings, tried connecting with and without the firewall. It also won't let me access the router settings via the specified address :-(Please can someone help me out Alaister Kay
October 7, 200520 yr I assume it's a wireless laptop and wireless router? If you can't access the router, you might have to change security settings on the router using a computer that's cabled to the router. First thing that comes to mind is MAC address filtering, but it could also be SSID broadcast, or encryption.Edit: just reread your post and saw that you're already using a cable, so it's probably not wireless settings. My ISP identifies me by my MAC network address, so if I connect a new computer to my internet cable it won't be recognized and won't connect. However, if you're using a router, the router's MAC address will be the one your ISP sees, so that shouldn't be a factor either.
