Video card question

Featured Replies

Hi,I'm looking for some advice.I currently have a pretty old system but it runs FS9 ok. I mean I'm used to it.I've lately been having some issues with my video card and I'd like to purchase a new one.I don't need to spend alot of money, I don't even need to get a big performance increase. I just want to see if it solves my problem.Anyway, I currently own an Nvidia FX5200 128M.I'd like to find something in the $100 dollar range if possible.Any recommendations?I am running Windows XP with 1G ram and an Athlon 1900 or something like this (THink it runs at 1.66GHZ)..Just upgraded to a newer hard drive.Again,I'm not looking for the fastest video card, just a good solid card that will work well with FS9. IF I get a performance increase, that's great. There's another game I play that uses Open GL ?? or something like this.. that's another consideration.Just looking for some advice.

Hey there, $100.00 will give limited choices in todays video cards. The first thing I would check: how fast is your AGP slot on your mother board? 4X, then It would definitly be a waste to get anything made today as most use 8x. It will still work, but you won't get the performance from it. From your post, you are not looking for increase in performance, so this doesn't really matter. Actually with pci express and SLI, AGP is now becoming outdated. If you can afford to spend alittle more, lets say 150.00 it really opens up the amount of cards you can buy. What are your system specs? That is key. The manufactures are catering to the high end rather than the lower. If you are not planning on using this for FS9, then you can get away with alot more. I use the Nvidia 6800GT made by BFG. I have also used ATI. I would say these are the two leaders in quality video cards out there today. They both have lower priced cards, but you may have to spend alittle more than $100.00 Also, if this post get moved, John always puts a link to it, as there is a video card forum here at AVSIM. Best regards, Jeff

Based on your hardware configuration, I'd recommend a ATI 9800Pro or for a few more bucks ($140) a Geforce 6600GT.
