Fs9 Hard Drive Replacement

Featured Replies

My C Drive needs to be replaced. This drive contains my Fs9 Directory; I have made a Backup using PowerQuest Drive Image 7. But I have been told that it cannot be used to restore Fs9 to my new HD because the new Registry will not recognise it. Can anyone confirm this for me, please? I have just checked out my present Registry but cannot find even a trace of Fs9; well, there is a reference to Ken Salter, I guess this must be FSAutostart.KenSomerset, England

Ken - There is just a single Registry entry for FS9. Look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator9.0 . FS9 itself will run fine without the Registry entry at all but the bigger problem is that many of the addons require their own Registry entries and won't run without them. But if you have imaged the entire drive the Registry is a part of that image so there would be no problem in that case.Doug

Hi Doug, many thanks for your reply. Problem is, that Drive has been in 2 other of my PC's, now it's time to bury it! That Registry is 'suspect' as well. Would it be ok to simply copy the entry for Fs9 and 'plant' it into the new one? Mmmm! having written it down, and reading it; it seems toooo easy :)Ken

This may be even easier :-) . Down load the utility here to create the Registry entry after you've copied the FS9 folder to the new drive: http://tweakfs.com/features_tfs_pu.htm . The enclosed instructions say, in part:"The FS9 Path Utility was prepared especially for users who manually copied the FS2004 installation to another folder or drive and reformatted their drives, but want to retain their FS2004 installation with all its add-ons. Using this utility avoids the need to reinstall FS2004 and allows you to restore the path in the registry quickly and easily." Sounds made-to-order for what you're doing.Doug

That utility seems to be just the job. I've just downloaded it, I'll check it out tomorrow. Freeware as well, amazing. One more thing about my Registry, I followed the path you gave me, when I opened 'microsoft/microsoft games/fs9' I found 2 folders 1 was 8.0 the other 9.0. Do you know if the 8.0 could be fs2k2, and could be deleted in case it's causing some sort of corruption?Ken

I've always wondered why the FS8 (FS2002) entry was there. Notice that it is a null set, i.e., there are no values associated. As such, I don't think it can cause a problem and would assume that it could be safely deleted (but I'd export it first just in case....).Doug

I ran the TweakFS Path Utility, it certainly seems as if it will create a path as you suggest, I'll find out more next week when the dastardly deed is done :)Yes, I Exported the fs9 folder for safe keeping then deleted the 8.0 sub folder; after which I checked the 9.0 sub folder and found that it only had 2 entries instead of the 10 if had before I deleted the 8.0 sub folder. No ill effects when I ran fs9 just now, so we can say that part of our cull is also a success. Just as a matter of interest, I had a look at all the files in the fs9 main folder and found a fs2000.cfg file also fs2000 and 2002.exe files, talk about collecting clutter :) Thanks for your help and advice, I'll post an update after the reformat and reinstall.Ken
