November 11, 200520 yr OK, This is a long thread but if you have ever had an out of memory error it might be worth reading, especially if you run over a gig of ram...So I know I am not alone in these dreaded out of memory errors in FS. I monitor the forums and see a lot of other posts, usually in the add-on forums. I have seen them on two machines with different mobos, ram setups, run FSM, relocated all of my landclass files, but to no avail. It is very perplexing. I do use a lot of add-on scenery but I get the errors in the UK as well as the US and Israel so it does not point to one particular scenery. I get the errors with LVL-D, PMDG 747 and now with the new PSS 777 so I do not think it is the planes, never really did. I have run memtest for 2 days straight, no erros at all. Removed sticks of RAM, basically you named it, I tried it. My RAM is on the approved vendor list for my mobo so no issues there. I have done everything in my power to rule out hardware. Then I found Heavyload by Jam Software, it is freeware. www.jam-software.com Everytime I tried to run the program, I would get out of memory errors after a few minutes. It was the ONLY time outside of FS I have ever ever seen that error and I play a ton of other games, video editing, DVD burning without any issues at all. So to Google I went and I found a slightly dated but very relevant article. http://groups.msn.com/HardwareJunkies/memo...agementpt2.msnw So I started to play around with my swap file settings. I run a Raid-0 setup with my swap on a seperate partition strictly for fragmentation purposes. I had it set 4096-4096, no luck. Tried system managed, no luck removed one stick and tried with 2048-4096 and still no luck, tried system managed with one stick and got the error again.Sooooo and I know there are a lot of people who argue this practice, I disabled my swap completely. Guess what folks, For the first time, I have been running for hours at 100% CPU and full Ram utilization. I am going to let this run for as long as possible. If it is still going in the morning, I will retry the KSEA-KEWR flight that I have crashed with the OOM error for the past two days. I just found it very interesting that I could replicate the error with Heavyload testing memory and a swap file (either system managed or defined) and could not replicate the issue with a swap disabled. Might be worth someone else trying to verify if they have the time... For me at least, I see an immediate difference and HeavyLoad is still running along happily without a swap. It has written 3.5 gigs to temp so far :) Never even got 100 megs before...Oh well, It feels like for the first time I might be on to something so I thought I would share. Hope it helps,-PaulUpdate 9:10 pm est.So HeavyLoad is still going. I have never achieved this before where I have been able to let it just run without crashing. It has now written 6.5 gigs to temp and still going. I am pretty excited right now as this is the most progress I have ever made with this issue so I have been giving it a lot of thought. Here is my thought...Maybe it is not the amount of RAM but the type... Is it possible that some of the newer lower latency RAM actually outperforms the swap? Maybe the computer thinks it is out of memory because when we finally go to write to swap (landings at add-on scenery with add-on a/c) the RAM is just pushihng the info to fast to be written to a swap, it can't write so it thinks it is out of memory and crashes? What do you think, is it possible?-Paul Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
November 11, 200520 yr Neat post. I don't get out of memory errors but might try disabling the page file just to see what happens. I have 1 gig and it never falls below about 400k. So what does the Heavyload program do?JimCYWG
November 11, 200520 yr Author Hi Jim,Heavyload is a program written to essentially put your CPU to 100% and then use all of your available RAM and see how long your box can run with that type of demand on it. I just spoke with another guy who has the EXACT same setup as mine. Only difference is he does not run Raid and he has never run a swap. Amazingly, he has never seen an out of memory, I get them frequently. With a swap, I could not get Heavyload to run for more than a matter of minutes.Incidentally, the HeavyLoad program is still going 13 or 14 hours now. Thus far it has written 65.5 gigs to a temp file during the process. Like I said, running a swap I have never been able to get it to do this... It just seems funny that this program seemed to have the same problem as FS when I ran a swap and the problem went away when the swap did.Next I will try some of my Famous Out of Memory flights and see what happens. I would be SOOOOOOO happy if I figured this out. Thanks for the feedback,-Paul Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
November 14, 200520 yr if you are running a windows pc, there should bo an option about rearanging things on the hard drive. also, are there programs that you are not using? delete them to make your system run beter:-wave
