Best anti shimmering solution?

Featured Replies

Hi folks, I just got a 6800GT 256mb and as everybody knows (everybody but me! ...should've researched more before I bought it) the shimmering is really annoying! I've tried all the drivers from 60.xx. to the latest beta and many many different AA/AF configurations, but the shimmering still bothers me. The best I could get was using high resolution(1200x that's the max my monitor can handle) and even 16xAA(!)/16xAF(!) but the shimmiring is still present and my monitor can't display this resolution with a good refresh rate. Is anybody here using the same card at 1600x? How is the shimmering? I'm wondering if I should return my card(pay restock fees+ shipping) and get an ATI JUST BECAUSE OF THE SHIMMERING IN FS2004! It works great with other games. I'm just frustrated because it is a very good card, runs FS2004 very "fluidly", very nice colors but the shimmering kills all of that! I read a post about the DXOverride tweak for the ATI cards, I was impressed by some screenshots and what people where saying on the other forums. Why isn't there a similar thing for the Nvidia cards? I'm supposing it's a DX tweak something to do with the texture's alpha channel, right? I don't really care much about shimmering in light poles, towers, fences etc. I'm bothered by things like lines on planes textures "moving around" like ants , and kind of the samething happening with ground textures when you turn the plane. I got this 6800 with a rebate, and for the same amount of money I could get a less performing ATI that hopefully would run FS without shimmering. Would that be worth it or should I stick with the 6800 until hopefully they solve this problem (either with a new Nvidia driver or when FS10 comes out)? Until then, I can always fly IFR with very low visibility... :)Leo

What have you got MIP mapping set at ........ ?

I went through this with a fellow forum member, also one of the best painters in FS. He had the issues and we spent a few months trying to figure it out. It turned out to be the 60hz refresh rate. His monitor drivers were limiting him to 60. I had him install the monitor as default plug and play and run the refresh at 75. Flickering was improved drastically. Also, if you have a good enough video card, disable all of the optimization or set the image quality to high quality. The optimization in the drivers are designed to increase performance, not image quality and can cause flickering as well. Just my findings...What type of monitor are you running? I am guessing LCD...-Paul

enolou: I have it set at 4, like everybody suggests. I've also tried it at 3, but it shows the same problem. Paul: I have a CRT 17" monitor, it runs at 75hz(max res.) and 85hz(1024x768). I'll try the optmization sets again. I got that nHancer program( http://www.nhancer.com/) it allows you to do a lot of tweaks on nVidia cards, I could improve the shimmering a bit setting the LOD to a higher number but the image gets too blurry even close to the plane. I'll just keep trying! I read that the 7xxx series doesn't have this shimmering problem, is that true? Something to do with using AA with transparency(not sure what that means!)Thanks,Leo

Something to do with using AA with>transparency(not sure what that means!)Yep, there's barely any shimmer when you use 16X AF, LOD Clamp, and Supersample Transparency AA.Transparency AA allows the card to AA textures themselves as well as 2D "alpha test" textures like trees, power poles, etc - much of the texture shimmer at low altitude is caused by actual aliasing within the lines of the ground texture, not the polygon edges of the terrain (which is what normal AA takes care of) It looks absolutely beautiful.

Ryan, could you post some screenshots with and without Transparency AA on your 7800? SS of areas that are famous for having shimmering(like your said: poles, trees, etc) Thanks! Leo
