January 14, 200620 yr Hi everyone. For Christmas this year, I got an ATI X800 XL PCIE board for my computer (I had been using an X300 believe it or not). So, I was looking forward to seeing some FPS improvement and be able to turn on AA and anisotropic filtering. I installed the card and I get one of the following errors within a few minutes of flight:1) The game freezes and I have to hard reboot.2) The screen goes black and whatever sound was on loops. I then have to hard reboot.3) The VPU Recover window pops up and tells me the GPU has been reset. Soon after 1) or 2) occurs. To try to solve this problem, I've done the following:1) Updated to 5.13 catalyst drivers from ATI2) Updated the drivers for my sound card3) Updated DirectX4) Updated my bios5) Adjusted video hardware settings to minimal levels6) Adjusted settings in dxdiag7) Recreated the fs9.cfg file by deleting it and letting FS 2004 create a new one.8) Tried the Omega drivers and hardware tools to monitor temperature (never gets over 55 in dense graphical environments which I've been told is acceptable.)So far, nothing has solved the problem. I've been working with ATI as well who have been very responsive, but I know there are a lot of folks in this forum with specific experience working with FS 2004. I'd appreciate any help or advice. Thanks,JoshuaSystem Specs:Dell Dimension 8400Pentium 4 3.2 GHz with 800 MHz FSB1 GByte RAM160 GByte 7200 RPM IDE HDSoundblaster 24-bit Live! cardATI X800 XL PCIE cardDell E193FP Monitor
January 14, 200620 yr Author Well, I tried one more thing from when I used to be a hardware engineer. I took the card out and cleaned the contact points. It seems the card was either not properly inserted or the contacts were dirty (which they were). I'm happy to report I've flown for two hours today with framerates near 60 (the refresh rate of my monitor). Anyone else had a problem with electrical contacts affecting performance? Thanks,JoshuaP.S. If this is the performance I can expect with my ATI card, I'm a very happy person.
January 15, 200620 yr I'm glad you got it solved and like your new card now. I thought I might just clean all my card contacts as a maintenance precaution. Being that you are a hardware engineer, what method and cleaning agents do you recommend for cleaning board and memory stick contacts? Thanks,Ted [email protected] ghz, Noctua C12P CPU air cooler, Asus Z77, 2 x 4gb DDR3 Corsair 2200 mhz cl 9, EVGA 1080ti, Sony 55" 900E TV 3840 x 2160, Windows 7-64, FSX, P3dv3, P3dv4
