February 11, 200620 yr Hi, my computer specs. is:AMD 64 3200+ | 1GB Ram | eVGA 6600GT 128mb PCI-eI spent sometime reading reviews. It looks like a 7800GT 256MB generally doubles the FPS comparing to a 6600GT in game benchmarks. (However they of course use a faster CPU for the test, AMD 64 4000+)My question is, although I don't really expect doubled FPS, would it be worth it (performance gain) to upgrade my 6600GT to a 7800GT? My second choice whould be a ATI X850XT. They are about $300 and $200.Thank you!Jason JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
February 11, 200620 yr Hey Jason,My rig is almost the same as yours and I was very lucky to test my rig with a 7800gt and all I can say is WOW. There is a huge difference in performance, but I didnt run only FS i did it with FEAR HL2 Need for speed most wanted as well as FS 2004 and I saw a world of difference with higher effects on ans still staying smooth. As far as the CPU the difference between the 3200 and 4000 is small. The 4000 runs at 2.4 and my 3200(venny core),2.0 stock, overclocked hits 2.8 on stock cooling without a problem.Paul
February 12, 200620 yr Author OMG OMG, Thank for the "insiders" reply. I am buying it...let me talk to my wife first....but I am buying it....OMG.Jason JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
February 15, 200620 yr Author Still in the process of "application". Wow you overclocked a 2.0gHz CPU to 2.8 with stock cooling? You must live in North Pole. I just bought the newest Thermaltake K8 heatsink and fan. It's quieter if nothing else. Which 7800GT card did you test with? I am currently looking at eVga & XFX. Obviously it's such a good overclocker they come "factory overclocked".As it is right now with 6600GT, my FPS can stay above 20 even with heave cloud layers (ASV). But every now and then my FPS goes down by 10 or more when FS9 loads up stuff (mesh, cloud draw, texture & AI, etc.) I hope 7800GT, being faster with more memory, can fix that problem for me.Jason JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
February 15, 200620 yr yes the 7800gt i played with, XFX brand, was extremely smooth and from what i saw there was no stutters. As far as the overclock was concerned since i am using a 3200 with a venice core its using a much lower cpu voltage, 1.4 to be exact, I didnt have to raise the voltage at all just increased the FSB and my memory handled it with easy also my Asus board had some built in overclock presets, raised to a max of 10%, but it wasnt good enough so i used the manual setting and went to a FSB of 208 mhz where is was stable running my PRIME mem test and SYSANDRA test. I also use Shin Etsu thermal paste which I think its the best stuff out there. Its a little tricky applying but well worth the effort.thanksPaul
