Tough question for hardware guru's - please help

Hi Folks,I've had a new Hewlett Packard desktop (a1350n) for about a week and it's fantastic. But, I did have a problem after changing monitors which may have caused FS9 to be corrupted and an internet connection shortcut to be wiped off the desktop.I had FS9 running extremely well on the new computer using the lcd monitor which originally came with the computer. Then I decided to exchange the original monitor with an upgraded one from HP. I installed the upgrade monitor and checked it after booting. Here's what I found: First I noticed that the shortcut for "internet connection" was missing from the desktop. Then after setting the shortcut up again, I went on the internet and all seemed ok - I also looked at some pictures from /My Pictures and they were ok. THEN, I tried to start FS9 and found that the startup screen (to choose or create flights) and the mouse pointer were flickering very fast and were unuseable. I then rebooted and tried again, but the same condition happened. Then I removed the new monitor and installed a CRT monitor from my old computer and tried FS9 again. This time when I started FS9, the screen went black when it got to the point where the start up screen should have been displayed. Also, the green "on" light on my crt was flashing. At this point, I decided to uninstall FS9 and reinstall it as it seemed to me it was corrupted. I have reinstalled FS9 and it has been working well for the past 2 days. Finally to my question (sorry for the long approach): Does anyone have any idea what could have caused FS9 to be corrupted and the desktop shortcut (for Internet Connection) to be wiped off the desktop, when the only thing I did was to install a new lcd monitor? My main concern is that I want to be sure there isn't something lurking within the computer/monitor which will come up to bite me after the 21 day refund period is finished. My new system is as follows: Hewlett Packard A1350n, Athlon 64 X2 4200, 1 gig ram, 250 hd, Evga GeForce 6800gs, 19in HP monitor, WinXp Home edition. Thanks for your help in advance.

Sounds like to me the resoultion was incorrect for the old monitor that you switched. LCD and CRT monitors dont use the same resoultions or frame rates. I would tried going into safe mode, pressing F8 after the ram count screen just when it goes black, and adjust the resoultion from there. A complete reformat just automatically adjusted the resoultion to whatever monitor was hooked up at the time of a new install. I am not sure about the missing icon that could just be a fluke as a result of the monitors being switched and you could also have tried a system restore and that should bring your system back to the state it was, which you can choose, before you installed the CRT.I hope this clears things up for youPaul

Thanks for the info Paul. The primary problem that concerns me, is the corruption of FS9 after installing the upgraded lcd monitor. I understand what you mean about different resolutions between my old crt and the new lcd. But, the original lcd and the upgraded lcd both had the same resoution.Cheers...

ah my mistake i thought you went from LCD to CRT and file corruption in my years of pc building and repairing doesnt happen with a monitor switch, however installing new drivers it MIGHT happen especially if they are beta or untested drivers. By the way who or what company makes the video card you are using?edit: never mind about the video card what version of the nvidia drivers are you using?thanksPaul

Hi Paul,Sorry I didn't answer sooner, been busy with non FS stuff (not fun stuff).I downloaded the latest drivers from Evga and they are 81.98.Cheers....

Hi Howard, Don't mean to hi jack your thread but was wondering what you thought of your LCD monitor. I recently went to a Samsung 940 19 inch monitor which received rave reviews. But I seem to have considerably more shimmer during the day and flickering of the lights at night that I did not have with my crt monitor. Thanks Chuck

Hi Chuck,Welcome to the thread - good question. I love the HP monitor and the new computer. Check out the Top 10 19in Monitor review in www.pcworld.com. I agree with their comments. Just search on top 10 monitors or F1905 (that's the HP model #). The F1905 comes with external speakers which are good for FS.I do get a bit of flickering as you said, but not enough to bother me. Overall I'm totally satisfied with the monitor. I wonder what effectthe video card has concerning the conditions you indicated.Cheers....
