March 20, 200620 yr Hi everyone!Recently I got myself a new display, but after switching the screen res in FS9 from 1280x960 to 1600x1200, I realized that my GF FX5900XT is not sufficient for my requirements any more. Thus, I'm looking for an affordable AGP upgrade and I was happy to hear about the GF7800GS, as I won't have the money for a new MB along with a new CPU and new RAM (and of course a new VGA card). While I was already close to clicking the "buy now" button, I started wondering if the upgrade is really sensible in my case. What's your opinion? Here's my setup:AMD Athlon XP2800+2x 512 MB RAM2x WD Raptor 74 GB on S-ATANow: GF FX 5900 XTFuture (?): GF 7800 GSWould you think I should spend the money or save it for a completely new system? Thanks to everyone!Cheers, Holger
March 25, 200620 yr If you are thinking of keeping the system for a while, probably not a bad idea, but the system seem a little dated now.If you are thinking of upgrading the mobo/cpu in the not too distant future, do nothing -or- get a 6600GT - great value at $150 or so, and will definitely speed up your system from a 5900.* Orest Orest Skrypuch President & CEO, UVA www.united-virtual.com
March 25, 200620 yr It also depends on what kind of power supply and cooling you have. Most newer cards require a 400W or greater power supply, and when you upgrade the CPU, you will need to worry about more cooling and power as well. If your case and power aren't adequate, then if you can afford it, I would replace the whole thing. Otherwise you may end up spending almost as much for a hack.
