  1. Nice. I took my primary training and got my certificate flying out of KFIT when I lived in New England. I really, really miss it.
  2. MyTraffic 6 was $20 and the install was simple and took about 15 min. Much simpler for me and no issues. I fly GA aircraft, so I just want traffic that is plausible and varied. I don't care about various repaints, schedules, gate assignment, etc. MyTraffic can be installed with FSX boxed, FSX-SE, or P3D, all from the same install. Well worth the $20.
  3. After scanning my system, it looks like I have hundreds of duplicate AFCAD files, resulting from a mix of Ultimate Terrain (most current version of every region installed), MyTraffic 6, and various add on airports from FSDT, Imaginesim, FlyTampa, and others. While I have these files layered correctly in the scenery.cfg, with MyTraffic at the lowest priority, then Ultimate Terrain, then add on airports, does having these files cause a conflict? I've read that even with proper priority, it's necessary to disable all but the file in use at the highest priority. Is that the case?
  4. They overclock the CPU, run diagnostics and stress tests, and pre-load the application. They don't have any "secret sauce" or do much (if anything) that any high end gaming PC builder doesn't also do.
  5. It's interesting to read the various ways people flightsim, and what can be a showstopper for some isn't even important to others. For me, I'm a real world GA pilot and I've been simming for about 30 years, since the days of DOS and SubLogic. I've also been using MyTraffic since the first versions with FS2002 and FS9. I want airports that aren't empty and skies with traffic that ATC can warn me about and that I can hear as chatter. I could not care less about what airline or livery is at a gate or what time a flight leaves or arrives. I just want plausible traffic in the correct geographies as background, just like in real life I have no idea what flight numbers or schedules are for air traffic near me.
  6. N60JBravo...you are going way over my head. I am dev challenged. What I'm experiencing is when I am selecting LGA from the free flight menu, I go to New York and La Guardia is in the list and when I select it with the default "active runway" it shows Edo. This is with all 3rd party LGA add ons disabled (or AFAIK disabled).
  7. Hmmm...after posting on their forum, I found out that he adds bgls in scenery\world\scenery that are labeled with the airport identifier with ALT. Rename or remove those and your runway issues may be fixed. I'm not educated enough on where the info for the location picker comes from, but something is messed up. It's unfortunate but the scenery is unusable to me with single digit fps, despite a cutting edge overclocked system. I also get OOM errors in about 30 sec, which do not happen with the Imaginesim KLGA and FSDT KJFK both enabled. I should have done the trial first, but saw the package on sale and read good reviews.
  8. Reviving this old thread.... I purchased Drzewiecki's NY Airports X which includes KLGA - La Guardia. As far as I know, everything was working fine previous to the installation. If I disable the add on and go back to default, when I select "active runway" at La Guardia, what comes up is "Edo" and KLGA is not properly rendered in the sim. If I choose a specific runway or gate, then all is well. Anyone know what's up here? Did the add on package step on or remove some default bgl or info?
  9. I've only been a casual user at Avsim, but have been coming here for about 13 years. Thank you for providing a place like this for the flight sim community. All my best wishes Tom for you and your family during this very personal time.
  10. It doesn't look like either one shows up in FSX. Does anyone know of a good freeware or payware add on? I checked the Avsim library and nothing appears to be available there.
  11. I bought the Steam Edition as many have done to get the sale price and as a backup. Can anyone comment on the Windows 8.1 (dare I mention Windows 10?) compatibility? Is the FSXSE more fully Win 8.1 compatible?
  12. Thanks for both suggestions. I can check tonight, but do you know if that will work with a non-licensed copy of FSUIPC?
  13. I have a pretty robust system (6 core i7-3930K) with 8GB RAM and a GTX580 1.5GB VRAM. I use mainly photoscenery without autogen in the US and fly small GA aircraft such as the A2A Skyhawk and Cherokee. Up until now I have really never had an OOM crash, except in NYC when I had enabled HD textures. I have since reduced my max texture to 1024. Yesterday I started to get crashes with the FSUIPC VAS alarm (ding, ding, ding) going off, but FSX.EXE was using around 1.9GB according to Task Manager. Is there a way to log VAS and specifically the process using it? Does the moment of task swapping out of full screen to a window cause VAS to be reduced by close to 2GB?
  14. It's very nice, but has nothing to do with flying an aircraft. That was my point. I guess it's just a different outlook on my part.
  15. Very nice, but what's the point? It's called FLIGHT Simulator, not airport terminal interior simulator.
  16. FSX is a 32 bit application, so it's limited to 4GB of virtual address space. When you add complex aircraft, mesh, detailed scenery with large HD textures, etc., with tweaks in the fsx.cfg that increase these impacts, when you get close to the ground on approach, these impacts cause the app to run out of VAS.
  17. As someone who doesn't spend a ton of time on the forums, and who prefers to fly and sim more than discuss it, I do have to say that many of the members of this community are the prototypical examples of "the glass is half empty" personalities. I remember 10 years ago and the discussions around FS9, and the people who were never moving from FS2002, and all the flaws of FS9 and the performance challenges. I remember the people who lambasted the Microsoft team about everything to do with FSX, and who swore they would never move off of FS9 (they were probably the same people who were never leaving FS2002 behind). You had the conspiracy people with regard to XP SP1 and the accompanying security changes. There were the people who knocked Vista, then were never moving to Windows 7 and they would have to pry Windows XP from their cold, dead fingers. Then the "tragedy" of Windows 8 happened, and now it's Windows 7 forever. It's just amusing the conculusions that get jumped to, and in every event there is a black cloud to be saved from every silver lining. :-)
  18. Yes, performance has been very good. I have an overclocked i7 3930K, so that helps, but I lock on 30 fps in FSX and don't have much trouble achieving that in most areas, even with 3rd party scenery and add on aircraft. I fly all general aviation, so I'm not using PMDG or any complex airliners, but I do use A2A's C172 and Cherokee, along with other more complex GA aircraft. My setup is actually fine for what I do. I've been thinking of playing around with P3D v2.x, so for that I would want to upgrade to a GTX780, Wasn't wanting to spend $500, but if I can offset by getting something back for the GTX580, then it might be something I'd do.
  19. Why do people have to start rumor, conjecture, innuendo, and spread unfounded guesses passing as thoughtful comments? Where has it been stated or even hinted that Microsoft is disabling activation for existing copies of FSX? Nothing has been mentioned officially or unofficially to support that, yet people here become hysterical and are discussing all kinds of far fetched nefarious scenarios. Why not wait until the evil plots are hatched before going off on paranoid rants.
  20. You know, I'll try not to be impolite or nasty, but it's these kinds of ignorant posts that start rumors and people who hear innuendo and take it as fact. If you want to review the support lifecycle for WIndows 7, here it is: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=14484 As you can see, mainstream support ends in 6 months. That date has been available since the release of the product. The support lifecycle is consistent and published. No one "pulled the plug" on anything. Win 7 will be 11 years old at the time that it is completely out of extended support, Windows XP was 13 years old when support finally ended for it. Not many products get 11 or 13 years of active support. Here is the definition of each phase of support: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us I get upset with these types of posts because the implication of the OP is that somehow Microsoft woke up today and decided in the evil lair to stop supporting Windows 7, with the implication that it's a plot to make you upgrade to...GASP...Windows 8. This is much adoo about absolutely nothing.
  21. Maybe I'm just not into getting wound up in speculation and supposition...so to me, it's more than exists today. As another poster said, if it exposes FSX and flight simulation to more people, that can only be good. It may drive innovation in other areas and may create a bigger market for simulations like P3D, which may drive better and more available add on content from 3rd parties who can also market to the masses on Steam. I think too many people on Avsim get so busy making the perfect the enemy of the good that nothing ever pleases this community. I'll wait and see what happens, and if it's just an arcade game like MS Flight, then nothing ventured and nothing gained.
  22. I live in Georgia and may be looking at an upgrade from my EVGA GTX580 to a GTX780. The card has not been OC'd and is used with a liquid cooled CPU in a room with A/C. No issues in the 2+ years that I've had it. PM me if you're interested and we may be able to work something out.
  23. Thanks. So it seems the consensus is to hang tight. Just out of curiosity, if I did move to P3D v2.x now, would that make the GPU upgrade worth it, both from a performance and cost perspective? Is there $500 worth of benefit? I'd prefer to hang tight and do the CPU to the Haswell-E or Broadwell-E (8 cores) and get the 800 series NVidia card that will inevitably be out by then.
  24. Of course here is the important question... I have a i7 3930K which doesn't support PCIe 3.0, but a mobo (Asus P9x79) which supports PCIe 3.0. So would there be any real performance gain for spending $500 on a GTX780? I use mainly FSX today, but do plan to move to P3D with time. $500 and new GTX780 with current CPU/mobo? Waste of $500?
