April 5, 200620 yr With the recent release of the Intel-based Macintoshes, I've been wondering if someone would be able to dual boot OS X and Windows so I could ditch my PC and run Flight Simulator on a Macintosh. Well, it turns out the Apple has already provided a way to do this with their "Boot Camp" utility at http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/.So without getting into a religious discussion, I'll just ask this: has anyone tried running Flight Simulator on a new iMac under Windows? How does it perform? Is it a viable replacement to my desktop (P4 2.8Ghz, 1GB RAM).Thanks,Jon (KSEA)
April 5, 200620 yr I would think it would be difficult to run DirectX9 on the mac graphics hardware. You could do it all in software, but that of course is a performance killer. Game controller and sound also need to be handled, but I think that would be easier.scott s..
April 5, 200620 yr I am sure with the intel chips and new software, someone will do it. It will be interesting to see the results and have some actual numbers.
April 5, 200620 yr Rumor has it that DX9 is supported. In the past, using something like VirtualPC, trying to do something like this was out of the question, but if it is supporting DirectX 9 and natively booting into XP...Jon (KSEA)

I loaded FS2004 onto my iMac yesterday and gave it a try and it worked great. I haven't played it too extensively yet but it seems to work just like any PC. The graphics card is a 128 MB ATI Radeon X1600. The dual core 2GHz processor doesn't hurt either.
April 10, 200620 yr Thanks, Toews. Were you running any addons at all? Any more specific information regarding FS settings you were using and FPS?Jon (KSEA)
April 10, 200620 yr I'm running it on my Macmini core duo - and it runs like a dream. My PC is a 2ghz Athlon with 512 RAM and a GeForce FX5600xt and it would never get above 20 -24 fps (at BEST) and I was just resigned to that.I've just flown EGHH - EHAM in the PMDG 737 using ASV with the weather setting at ultra high - on the ground at EGHH, in the VC with Gary Summons scenery I was getting 24fps (dipping to 17 -18 but only for split seconds). In the air, I was getting up to 50 -60! (though not in the VC). In the exact same situation on the PC, with the same weather settings, I used to get ... wait for it ... 4FPS! I remember it even went down to 1 (ONE) once!Considering the standard framerate for films and dvds is 24-ish, I'm very happy. You don't need more than that - and on the Mac, I noticed no stutters or freezes whatsoever.I wouldn't recommend buying a Mac just for simming - I got mine because I'm a freelance graphic designer - so it does the lot for me. I can tell you though, the only reason I boot the pc up now is to get FS files off there!!Simon
May 18, 200620 yr What is the memory on your MAC? Have you continued to have excellent experience on the MAC with FS2004?thanks,Bruce
